geography

Claix is located south of Grenoble at the confluence of the Gresse and Drac rivers . On the one hand, the municipality can be seen as a mountain municipality due to its location up to 1960  m in the foothills of the Vercors , on the other hand it belongs to the suburbs of Grenoble. Parts of the municipality belong to the Vercors Regional Nature Park .

Neighboring municipalities are Varces-Allières-et-Risset , Seyssins , Lans-en-Vercors , Le Pont-de-Claix , Échirolles and Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte .

Community structure

The community consists of two larger settlements, Le Bourg with the old town, town hall and the church of St. Peter as well as Le Pont Rouge in the plain that was built around the old bridge over the Drac.

The municipality also has a large number of small villages and hamlets that stretch along the slopes of the Vercors, including La Balme, Saint Ange, Furonnières, Le Peuil and Savoyères.

population

While at the beginning of the 1960s only a little more than 2000 people lived in the 24.1 km² municipal area, their number has now almost quadrupled; According to INSEE , the population was 7388 in 1999, and in 2004 it was as much as 7632. This strong increase is due on the one hand to increased population influx into the greater Grenoble area, on the other hand, more and more older French people in particular moved away from the capital Paris to more rural areas.
