Structure of the field army (Bundeswehr, Army Structure 4)
The division of the Bundeswehr field army in Army Structure 4 describes the units of the field army in the period from 1980 to 1992. Army Structure 4 thus describes the formation of the field army at the end of the Cold War .
The field army is part of the army of the Bundeswehr. The further breakdown of the other sub-areas of the army can be found in:
- Part 1 - Introduction and structure of the lists, command of the army, structure of the army office and subordinate area
- Part 2 - Field Army: Structure of the Field Army (Bundeswehr, Army Structure 4)
- Part 3 - Territorial Army: Structure of the Territorial Army (Bundeswehr, Army Structure 4)
Leadership of the field army
At the head of the army was the army command staff with the army inspector at its head. This was the supreme superior of all soldiers in the army. Operationally, the armed forces of the field army were fully integrated into the NATO command structure. In the event of a defense , the field army would have been led by multinational staff. The corps were the highest level of organization in the German field army. A special feature was the headquarters of the Allied Land Forces Schleswig-Holstein and Jutland (LANDJUT), which was also a large unit at corps level and consisted of German and Danish troops. In the event of a defense, another German division was subordinate to the Dutch 1st Corps ( ndl .: 1st lergerkorps) and the VII. US Corps .
The following corps considered in this list were assigned to the following NATO commands or command areas or army groups in the event of a defense:
-
Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE)
-
Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT)
-
Northern Army Group (NORTHAG)

Other divisions III. corps
The 12th Panzer Division was only subject to III. Corps . In the case of defense, the division was intended as part of the American-led VII. US Corps , see there for details .
LANDJUT
LANDJUT was a large German-Danish association at corps level. The formation into a fighting association would only have taken place in the event of a defense. Most of the troops under defense were assigned to other units in peacetime. The German troops correspond to large German formations, the Danish troops correspond to other large Danish formations. Only a few troops were subordinate to LANDJUT during the peacetime. In the following, only the fully German troops assigned in the event of a defense are considered.
Corps troops (LANDJUT)
Because of the special structure in LANDJUT's operational area, the list deviates from its usual scheme and does not present the corps troops as they were intended for LANDJUT in the event of a defense. The troop units intended for LANDJUT are instead listed in the large units leading them in peacetime with a corresponding note on assignment to LANDJUT in the event of a defense. Essentially, the number and composition of the corps troops in the case of defense does not differ from the war organization of the other corps. The troops provided by the Danish side are also not considered. The corps troops assigned to LANDJUT in the event of a defense are subordinate to the 6th Artillery Regiment (see division troops 6th Panzer Grenadier Division ) and the Schleswig-Holstein Territorial Command .
6th Panzer Grenadier Division
The 6th Panzer Grenadier Division was subordinate to the I. Corps for service and training in peacetime. In the event of a defense , she would have become part of LANDJUT's troops. In peacetime, the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division was subordinate to additional units that were directly subordinate to LANDJUT as corps troops in the war organization.
