Scey-Maisières is a French municipality with 291 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Doubs in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
geography
Scey-Maisières is 339 m above sea level, five kilometers west of Ornans and about 16 kilometers south of the city of Besançon (as the crow flies). The double community extends in the Jura , on the northern bank of the Loue , between the heights of Malbrans in the north and Barmaud (with the ruins of the castle Saint-Denis) in the south.
The area of the 12.53 km² municipal area covers a section of the western French Jura. The central part of the area is taken up by the valley of the Loue, which flows here in a winding course to the west. The erosion valley is cut around 200 m deep into the surrounding high plateaus. It has a flat valley floor (especially above Scey), which is bordered by steep slopes. These slopes are crowned at the upper edge in various places by striking rock walls with a resistant layer of limestone. On the upper slope of the valley, the Loue valley is about 1.5 kilometers wide. In the eastern part of the municipality, the border mostly runs directly above the steep drop to the Loue Valley and thus extends to the heights of Barmaud ( 511 m , in the south) and Bois de Narpent ( 520 m , in the north). With a narrow tip, Scey-Maisières reaches in the far northeast into the Ravin du Puits Noir , an erosion valley of the Brême brook (northern tributary of the Loue).
Below Scey-en-Varais, the course of the Loue river forms the southern border. Here the community area extends northward over the steep slopes to the adjacent high plateau with the protrusion of the Rocher de Colonne . On a hill on the plateau of Malbrans to the north, the highest point of Scey-Maisières is reached at 558 m.
The municipality of Scey-Maisières consists of two villages:
- Scey-en-Varais ( 326 m ) slightly elevated on the north bank of the Loue
- Maisières-Notre-Dame ( 325 m ) in a valley widening of the Loue
Neighboring municipalities of Scey-Maisières are Montrond-le-Château , Malbrans , Tarcenay-Foucherans in the north, Ornans in the east, Chassagne-Saint-Denis and Cléron in the south and Cademène and Épeugney in the west.
history
The municipality of Scey-Maisières was settled very early. Traces from the Bronze Age have been found in the Pierrottes grotto . In the Middle Ages, Scey belonged to the powerful Scey rule, which had been under the sovereignty of the Counts of Burgundy since the 14th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the village came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The area changed in 1972, when the previously independent municipalities of Scey-en-Varais and Maisières-Notre-Dame merged to form the new municipality of Scey-Maisières. Today, Scey-Maisières is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays d'Ornans .
Attractions
The village church of St. Peter and Paul in Scey-en-Varais was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. It has a rich interior, including a group of statues from the 16th century, an altar from the 17th century and a pulpit from the 18th century. The neo-Gothic Notre-Dame-du-Chêne chapel near a former hermitage was built in the 19th century and is an important place of pilgrimage in the region. The Chapelle du Croc is another place of worship in the municipality. Of the secular buildings, the Château de Malecôte should be mentioned. Outside the parish are the ruins of the medieval castle Saint-Denis, originally from the 11th century, above Scey-en-Varais. One of the natural attractions is the so-called Miroir de Scey, where the dammed Loue moves so quietly that the landscape with the Saint-Denis Castle is reflected in it.

With 291 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Scey-Maisières is one of the small communities in the Doubs department. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (307 people were still counted in 1881), there has been significant population growth again since the beginning of the 1980s.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Scey-Maisières was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding). Today there are some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Ornans to Cléron.
