At the XXIII. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , 41 competitions - 24 for men and 17 for women - were held in athletics . The venue was the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum .
Participant and boycott
The Los Angeles Olympics weren't the first games to be boycotted. There was a preliminary high point at the previous event in 1980 in Moscow , when the current host country, the USA, initiated a boycott that several countries - u. a. also the FR Germany - had joined. Now came the return coach of the Soviet Union, which was joined by most of the nations that belonged to the Warsaw Pact . Detailed information can be found in the general section on the 1984 Olympic Games .
As in many other sports, the boycott meant that numerous favorites and world-class athletes were not at the start. There was a particular lack of track and field athletes from the USSR and the GDR, who, along with the United States, had regularly been among the most successful nations by far in recent years. In addition, the lack of athletes from Poland, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria made itself felt.
Stadion
The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was already the venue for the track and field competitions at the 1932 Olympic Games . Other sports too, v. a. American football and major public events were held there. The sports facility was rebuilt and modernized for the 1984 Games. Among other things, a completely new running track was installed that met the most modern demands. The audience capacity was again significantly increased.
Competitions
There were three extensions and one change in the competition offer. All innovations only concerned the women's disciplines, the men's program has remained until today - as of January 2018 - in the same form as it has been practiced for a long time.
- With the 3,000-meter run , the women’s first long-distance track entered the Olympic program.
- The longest Olympic running route ever, the marathon, has now been added for women .
- The long hurdle course, the 400-meter hurdles race , was now also offered to women.
- In the all-around competition , the previously held pentathlon was replaced by a heptathlon .
In the women's disciplines, there were further additions for the future. A second long distance on the track was still pending and the jumps, throws and walking should later be gradually aligned with the men's competition catalog.
doping
The issue of doping did not yet play a role in the discussions or in the media, as it did later. The controls, too, were far from a systematic and clear rules that were applied. But the problem cannot be overlooked, especially in retrospect.
- In athletics, there were four doping cases punished during the games.
- The Finnish endurance runner Martti Vainio was initially the runner-up in the 10,000-meter run because of a positive doping test immediately after the race and was no longer admitted to the 5000-meter final .
- In the discus throw , the Icelander Vésteinn Hafsteinsson , who had dropped out after a seventh place in his qualification group, was then tested positive for taking nandrolone and subsequently disqualified.
- The Italian Giampaolo Urlando was disqualified in the hammer throw after evaluating the doping test from the final. He was first in fifth place and then tested positive for the use of testosterone .
- In the javelin throw , the Greek Anna Verouli was disqualified and suspended for one year after evaluating her doping test after the qualification, in which she was 13th. She had tested positive to take nandrolone .
- 31 years after her success, Dutch discus thrower Olympic champion Ria Stalman confessed to using banned anabolic steroids on Dutch television .
- In addition, there were numerous reports in which allegations were made by affected athletes and other parties involved to conceal positive doping tests and to secretly inform athletes who tested positive, who were then able to withdraw the funds. These allegations were made against athletes, coaches, officials and lawyers from the United States. Admissions about one's own doping abuse were also made in these publications many years before Ria Stalman's statements.
Sporting successes
The level of performance at these Olympic Games was significantly impaired by the boycott-related absence of numerous top athletes. Two world records were set in two disciplines . The Olympic record was improved eighteen times in a further eighteen disciplines .
With the Soviet Union and the GDR , two of the most successful nations in the past were not there because of their boycotts. Host USA presented itself as by far the most successful country with sixteen Olympic athletics victories. The FR of Germany followed by a long way , with four Olympic victories. Three nations won three Olympic victories each: Great Britain - in addition seven silver and six bronze medals, Romania - plus three silver and four bronze medals - and Italy - plus one silver and two bronze medals, Finland, Mexico and Morocco each had two Olympic champions. For all other nations there was at most one gold medal in athletics.
For the individual athletes, the following services should be mentioned in particular:
- Carl Lewis ( USA ) was the outstanding athlete of these games with four Olympic victories in athletics - 100-meter , 200-meter run , long jump and 4-by-100-meter relay . In doing so, he repeated exactly what Jesse Owens had succeeded in 1936 in Berlin .
- Valerie Brisco-Hooks ( USA ) won three gold medals - a 400-meter run , a 4-by-100-meter relay and a 4-by-400-meter relay .
- Chandra Cheeseborough ( USA ) became a two-time Olympic champion and won a silver medal - gold: 4-by-100-meter relay , 4-by-400-meter relay and silver: 400-meter run .
- Alonzo Babers ( USA ) won two gold medals - a 400-meter run and a 4-by-400-meter relay .
In addition, other services deserve special mention:
- Daley Thompson ( Great Britain ) became the second athlete in Olympic history to repeat his victory in the decathlon . Only the American Bob Mathias , who became Olympic champion in 1948 and 1952, had succeeded before him .
- Sebastian Coe ( Great Britain ) repeated his Olympic victory in the 1500 meter run . He was also the second athlete to achieve this. Before him, the New Zealander Peter Snell won this race in 1960 and 1964 .
- Twelve years after her high jump victory at the 1972 Olympic Games , Ulrike Meyfarth ( BR Germany ) won gold again in this discipline.
- Edwin Moses ( USA ) won the 400-meter hurdles for the second time after the 1976 Olympic Games - at the 1980 Olympic Games , he was unable to take advantage of his very good chances even then because of the US Olympic boycott.

August 8th and 9th
Scoring was based on a point table modified in 1977. For a better classification of the performance, in addition to the official points according to the rating table from 1977, the number of points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 is also given. According to this table that is valid today, there would have been no changes to the top eight. But these comparisons are of course only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.

3rd and 4th August
Was judged by the points table from 1971, the 1980 introduction of the seven-fight was valid. The rating system that was subsequently put into effect from 1985 is still current today - April 2020.
For a better classification of the performance, in addition to the official points according to the 1980 rating table, the points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 are also given. According to this table, which is valid today, there would have been some decisive changes:
- Sabine Everts would be first instead of third.
- Gold medalist Glynis Nunn and second-placed Jackie Joyner would each have moved down one rank.
- The fourth placed Cindy Greiner and Judy Simpson in fifth would have swapped places.
- Tineke Hidding, rank seven, and Kim Hagger, rank eight, would also have swapped places.
But these comparisons are only of course indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
