Participating teams

The field of participants remained unchanged compared to the previous year. Although at the beginning of 2010 there was the possibility that the Tiroler Club HC Innsbruck could return to the Bundesliga after its voluntary relegation in 2009, the club management announced that they would stay in the national league for at least one year in order to consolidate financially.

A few other clubs abroad had shown an interest in EBEL membership. The HC Bolzano in Italy was refused in 2009 on the part of the Italian Association a commitment, although there were loose talks continue, but not to allow any participation. Recently a team from Poland also applied, although the long travel distances in particular spoke against acceptance. Nevertheless, there were extensive discussions here too.

In April reports were published that in addition to the Bolzano team, three other teams ( Ritten Sport , Asiago Hockey and HC Milano Rossoblu ) were interested in participating in the EBEL. However, concrete results have not yet been announced.

Possible participation of the EHC Munich

At the end of May it was also announced that the German club EHC Munich would consider participating in the EBEL. Munich was in the 2009/10 season, the second-Hockey League won in Germany and was the rise in the German Ice Hockey League rights. However, the DEL announced that the licensing process had been discontinued because the Munich company had submitted some of the necessary documents too late, which the Bavarians denied. Participation in the EBEL was then considered as an alternative by the club. The DEL checked the facts again, at the same time the necessary documents for the other two leagues were submitted. On June 14th, the DEB announced that it would not give EHC Munich permission to participate in the EBEL. The DEL, however, resumed the licensing process, which meant that Munich's participation in the EBEL was finally off the table.

Farm teams

For the 2010/11 season, new farm teams were founded at many Bundesliga clubs and cooperation agreements with teams from lower leagues were decided. This mainly affected the Oberliga , Austria's third-highest division. With the Capitals, the KAC, the VSV, the 99ers and the EHC Linz, five of the six Austrian EBEL clubs made up a farm team in this competition, with the EHC Linz team having been around for several seasons. Salzburg continue to run their second team in the National League , where a new collaboration has been decided between the KAC and the reigning champions EC Dornbirn . The 99ers are also competing for the second time with a team in the Slohokej League .

Mode and regulations

At the league meeting at the end of May 2010 in Bled , the framework schedule for the new season was announced. Then the mode of the previous season should be adopted, which means again three rounds back and forth with a total of 54 games for each team in the basic round. The International Breaks are scheduled for November 8th to 14th and December 13th to 19th. The playoffs are from the quarter-finals again in the mode Best of Seven played, and also in the semi-finals takes place again, a new seeding and how in the quarterfinals of the best-placed of the regular competes against the worst. They begin on February 27, 2011, the new master will be determined on April 7th and April 14th 2011 at the latest.

Rule changes

As in the previous season, some aspects of the rules were changed again this year, which were also noted by the International Ice Hockey Federation in the official rulebook for the years 2010 to 2014. The most important are listed here:

  • The music box runs backwards, as is common in North America.
  • If a further penalty is displayed while a penalty is in progress against a team and a goal is scored, the penalty displayed does not expire, but the current one. The later penalty time must therefore be served in full.
  • A minor bench penalty must be served by a player who was on the ice at the time of the misconduct.
  • A penalty shot must be taken by the fouled player himself.
  • When playing with a high stick, a face-off follows the missing team in the defense zone.
  • A player who has lost his helmet must go directly to his player bench.

National team breaks

On the part of the league management, the second and third international break for the preparation of the men's national team were planned for the season . The first interruption of league operations will take place from November 8th to 14th, 2010. The team takes part in the Telenor Hockey Cup in Hungary and competes in the short tournament against the teams from France , Japan and Hungary . The second interruption will take place from December 13th to 19th and will be celebrated with a tournament in Slovenia, in which Denmark , Norway and Slovenia will participate.

Transfers

The EC Red Bull Salzburg separated from some of the weaker legionnaires, but were able to hold a large part of the championship team. Some players switched to the National Hockey League : David LeNeveu , who had guarded the Salzburg goal in the preseason, switched to the Columbus Blue Jackets and defender Mike Siklenka signed a contract with the Atlanta Thrashers . However, with Ramzi Abid, an experienced Canadian striker who last played for Rögle BK in the Swedish Elitserien , Jonas Keszei ( IF Mölndal Hockey ), Danny Bois ( Rockford IceHogs ) and Shaun Heshka ( San Antonio Rampage ) signed some new players taken. In the course of the extensive preparation, a number of players were also tested, including Dan Bertram , Dan LaCosta , Nicolas Dumoulin , Pierre-Luc Sleigher and Joey Mormina , all of whom were sacked before the start of the season. Another striker should have come to Salzburg with Joel Broda , but the Canadian made use of an exit clause before training began and instead switched to Minnesota Wild in the NHL.

The Graz 99ers dismissed two of their top scorers, Greg Day and Eric Healey , for whom no replacements have been signed so far. Also left Sébastien Charpentier Graz. His successor in goal was Fabian Weinhandl , who had already been the first goalkeeper for a large part of last season. In addition, the 99ers succeeded in reuniting the three Iberian brothers Matthias , Martin and Florian from Graz . The team's defense was reinforced with former Capitals players Darcy Werenka and Yannick Tremblay (formerly Straubing Tigers ). Wish striker Mike Ouellette had originally signed a contract with the Kassel Huskies , but they were denied participation in the DEL , which is why Ouellette was finally able to be signed shortly before the start of the season.

Similar to the 99ers and the top scorer of the Vienna Capitals, left Patrick Lebeau , the club. He was replaced by François Fortier , who was last active for the Hamburg Freezers . With Sean Selmser and Marc Tropper , two more long-term team supports were adopted. The Capitals intensified as compensation against the old club policy especially with Austrian players: with Silvio Jakobitsch , Martin Oraze , Philipp Pinter and Martin Ulmer four new players came to Vienna. Also in goal, Jürgen Penker replaced the dismissed Frédéric Cassivi , a player who was also experienced in the national team and who last played for Rögle BK in the Elitserien for two years. With Jeremy Rebek , formerly Salzburg, an EBEL-experienced defender came to Vienna. The storm series was completed with Cory Larose , who had spent the previous season in Switzerland.

EHC Linz, on the other hand, had largely completed its squad planning in April and had a nominally very powerful attack with Healey von der Grazern and the veterans Rob Shearer , Pat Leahy and Brad Purdie , which also compensated for the departure of Markus Matthiasson . There were also some young players with whom the rejuvenation of the squad should continue. The defense was upgraded with Aaron MacKenzie ( HC Eaton Pardubice , Czech Extraliga ) and Reid Cashman ( Milwaukee Admirals , American Hockey League ).

With the signing of Kevin Mitchell and Greg Kuznik, the EC VSV renewed continued the renewal of its defense, which with Mike Stewart and Mickey Elick once again experienced the departures of long-serving veterans. There was also a big change in attack with the retirement of Günther Lanzinger and Wolfgang Kromp , both of whom had spent their entire careers and over twenty seasons at EC VSV. Both together had scored more than 1300 points in almost 2000 missions . Since another important striker left the club with Mikael Wahlberg , the VSV signed two new strikers: Derek Damon from the Kassel Huskies and Matt Ryan from the Augsburger Panthern . Since Kiel McLeod, a not undisputed player, left the club in the summer, a replacement was also signed here with the Slovenian Tomaž Razingar .

At the EC KAC, the new contract of striker Andy Schneider in particular caused a sensation. The center was committed to a return starting December 1. Andy Chiodo replaces Jordan Parise in goal , while Peter Ratchuk was signed as a replacement for offensive defender Jeff Tory . In addition, the club signed the Canadian striker Tyler Scofield , who last played for HC Plzeň in the Czech Extra League. With Tyler Spurgeon , another player was tested in the summer, who the club sees as an option for the future. Originally, the only 18-year-old Dutchman Dax van de Velden should have done a try-out, but he was poached by the Salzburgers after just a few days.

KHL Medveščak Zagreb signed Frank Banham 's top scorer and signed Ryan Kinasewich, an offensively strong defender who had been the ECHL's third best scorer with 103 points the previous season . There were also other tried and tested strikers in the form of Jonathan Filewich from Salzburg and Donald MacLean ( Malmö Redhawks ), as well as Wacey Rabbit ( Milwaukee Admirals ).

In Jesenice, a number of tried and tested local players were also sacked after an uproar in the team in early April. The club planned for the season with six to seven legionnaires and wanted to keep goalkeeper Dov Grumet-Morris and defender Alexander Dück , but this did not succeed. Instead , two legionnaires, Mitch O'Keefe and Jaakko Suomalainen , were signed in goal . For the defense Wade Skolney (who last had a season off) and Eric Werner ( Vålerenga Oslo ) were signed. Todd Elik , although 44 years old at the start of the season, decided to play another season. With Marc Cavosie and Brett Lysak , more strikers were brought on board.

Last year HDD Olimpija Ljubljana brought Andrej Hebar, a long-time striker, from Jesenice to Ljubljana. Under the direction of the Finnish coach Hannu Järvenpää , mainly Finnish players were also signed. Kari Haakana ( HC Valpellice , Serie A1 ), Sami Ryhänen ( LeKi , SM-liiga ), Kevin Kantee ( JYP Jyväskylä , SM-liiga) and Tomi Mustonen ( Oulun Kärpät , SM-liiga) strengthened the team. Ryhänen had already been signed by HC Innsbruck two years earlier , but had already been dismissed due to extremely poor fitness values before he had played a game for the club. The former Salzburg-born John Hughes and the Czech Petr Šachl also joined the team.

The Hungarian representative Alba Volán managed to keep the majority of the team, although a replacement had to be found for coach Jarmo Tolvanen . The Swede Ulf Weinstock became the new coach . With János Vas , Juha Alén and Dániel Kóger , three players left the club, for whom replacements were signed with Roger Holéczy , Szabolcs Fodor (both Budapest Stars ) and Attila Orbán ( Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák ). The Slovenian defender Aleš Kranjc came from Vienna .

Season preparation

As in previous years, most of the EBEL teams played one or more tournaments as part of their preparation. The most important competition was undoubtedly the premiere of the European Trophy , in which, in addition to some top European teams, EC Red Bull Salzburg also took part. Salzburg alignment with the Red Bulls Salute also the final tournament of the competition and was set fix it, but it ended in last place. Furthermore, the Rudi-Hiti Summer Cup took place, in which the EC VSV won the second time since 2008. The VSV also won the title at the first ever Ferdo Spajić Memorial Tournament in Zagreb , where the team won all three matches with the very close result of 1-0. The Hungarian club Alba Volán Székesfehérvár defended the title at the Gábor Ocskay memorial tournament , which was held for the second time .

Incidentally, the clubs competed with teams from all over Europe in individual encounters and were able to achieve a fairly even balance.

Main round

First try

First first half of the season

The basic round began on September 10th with a new edition of last year's final, in which Masters Salzburg could clearly prevail against the EHC Linz away from home. At the same time, there were some unexpected developments in the first rounds: while runners-up Linz had big problems, the Slovenian teams, which were rated less than this this season, were able to win some wins against the title favorites. The Vienna Capitals had to compensate for the loss of their first goalkeeper Jürgen Penker , who injured his ankle just before the start of the season. Since his substitute Rudolf Hummel could not perform as expected, the Capitals used the bankruptcy of the German first division club Kassel Huskies and signed their former goalkeeper Adam Hauser . The same thing happened to the Hungarian participant Alba Volán Székesfehérvár, where Zoltán Hetényi had to fill in for Tommi Satosaari in the first rounds .

In the first first round, the EHC Linz fell back to last place and confirmed this in the ninth round with a 9-0 debacle in Zagreb. In addition, the first goalkeeper Alex Westlund and a few other key players were injured, which made the situation even worse. HK Jesenice, on the other hand, was the first team to defeat the reigning champions from Salzburg, who subsequently also slipped into a minor crisis after the strong start. Jesenice benefited in the first few games from the unexpected but outstanding performance of a young striker trio, Rok Tičar , Robert Sabolič and Žiga Jeglič , none of whom were older than 22 years. The Capitals also showed that they had found the ideal strike partner for Benoît Gratton in François Fortier .

At the top of the table, the EC KAC replaced Salzburg, closely followed by the second team from Carinthia , the EC VSV. Both teams then ran a pair and were able to break away from midfield in the meantime. The Graz 99ers, on the other hand, had to struggle with a flagging offensive that only scored 23 goals in the first nine games. However, this was partially offset by a strong defense, the center of which was the young goalkeeper Fabian Weinhandl . Weinhandl initially confirmed his good performance from the previous season, but was also influenced in some games by the uncertainty of his front men.

First second half

The first change of coach took place after twelve rounds: the Hungarian participant Alba Volán parted ways with Ulf Weinstock and signed the Canadian Kevin Primeau , who had already gained EBEL experience at EC KAC a few years earlier. In addition, the team brought on another striker in Eric Johansson to improve the meager goal yield.

By the eighteenth round and thus the end of the first round, the EC KAC sat at the top of the table with a clear lead and was able to win ten games in a row, including the entire first second half of the season. The club was now eight points ahead of second place, for which Salzburg and Villach fought a neck-and-neck race. The Graz 99ers were able to get their crisis under control and won four games in a row after a series of defeats, which meant that the Murstadt team were able to maintain fourth place in the table for the second half of the season.

The Vienna Capitals struggled with an away weakness and lost a bit of ground compared to the top trio. Together with Graz, Zagreb and Jesenice, they formed a close-knit midfield. At the bottom of the table, Laibach, Linz and Alba Volán fought for eighth place. All three teams struggled with a series of defeats, with the Linz team disappointing the most and never finding their form despite isolated victories. In addition, after eighteen games there were only 38 goals scored, which corresponds to an average of only 2.11 goals per match and was by far the worst value in the league. The club reacted to the ongoing weakness in attacking and brought on board another striker in Justin Keller .

At the end of the first round, however, there were further changes in some teams. HDD Olimpija Ljubljana signed Jeff Tory, a defender who had been the cornerstone of the offensive game of the EC KAC in the previous three years, and at the same time sacked the less successful striker Sami Ryhänen and defender Kari Haakana . Burke Henry also returned to Laibach. Jesenice signed another striker in Toni Dahlman . Mike Prpich left the club in Zagreb and moved to Great Britain for the Newcastle Vipers .

Second round

Second first round

The second first half of the season was interrupted by the national team break after the first encounter. In the free time, some teams strengthened themselves with additional players. The EC VSV tested another winger in Josh Langfeld . HDD Ljubljana signed former KAC defender Jeff Tory and brought back Burke Henry , who had been without a club until then. In addition, a goalkeeper was signed with Jan Chábera , as Aleš Sila and Matija Pintarič could not bring the expected performances. EC Red Bull Salzburg brought on another defender in Erik Reitz , and EHC Linz released the disappointing striker Eric Healey from his contract and replaced him with Jason Ward .

With a 3: 5 away win in Linz on November 19, the EC KAC set the existing EBEL record of twelve successes in a row, which HK Jesenice and Vienna Capitals had held up until then, and ultimately built it to a total of 17 wins out. This also increased the lead in the table to twelve points. The EHC Linz and the Graz 99ers gradually showed better performances and were able to make up some ground in the table. Conversely, however, the EC VSV slipped into a series of defeats and thus lost a little connection.

However, this phase of the season was overshadowed by several incidents, some of which resulted in long bans for individual players. Above all, Andrej Hebar should be mentioned here, who lost his temper in an away game of his club HDD Ljubljana in Salzburg and physically attacked Kevin Puschnik , for which he was suspended until the end of the season. Previously, Robert Lukas from Linz had to pause twelve games after attacking Benoît Gratton from Vienna with a stick. The Viennese Raphael Rotter took a total of 16 games suspension for an attack on the referee after a penalty had not been given in a game against EHC Linz ( Aaron MacKenzie had injured Rotter with a stick in the face).

Second round

The second half of the season was marked by a packed program around Christmas and New Year's Eve, which culminated in a double round on January 1st and 2nd. After the outstanding winning streak, the EC KAC slipped into a low and was only able to win one of its nine encounters, which quickly reduced the lead that had been created. In contrast, the performance of Linz stabilized and even led to the fact that the team, as the most successful team in the second half of the season, was able to establish a certain lead over the last-placed teams. At the bottom of the table, HK Jesenice and Alba Volán lost a little, as expected. After it became known that goalkeeper Jaakko Suomalainen was struggling with a serious illness, the Slovak goalkeeper Michal Fikrt made further adjustments. The Graz 99ers also signed another striker in Quinn Hancock .

At the participant from Zagreb, however, there was the second change of coach of the season when Ted Sator was released from his contract due to lack of success. In addition, the former Graz striker Greg Day was brought back into the league. Nevertheless, Zagreb even slipped out of the playoff places and was only just able to stay in eighth place. A bit surprisingly, HDD Ljubljana was able to win several victories against favored clubs and fight for a place in the midfield, although the team still had to give up many points due to a lack of consistency.

Third round

Third first round

In the period of the third first half of the season, the transfer deadline stipulated by the world association fell, which was comparatively calm this season. Only two major changes were made in the squads of the teams: the Graz 99ers signed another defender in Jamie Hunt , and the EC KAC dismissed Peter Ratchuk and replaced him with Mike Siklenka , who had already played in Klagenfurt between 2006 and 2008 and in the Meanwhile also for the Salzburg team. In addition, the contract with Andy Schneider was finally terminated ; the striker switched to the 2nd national ice hockey league for the SERC Wild Wings .

There were also few changes in the table. The EC KAC overcame the temporary low and with seven wins from nine games in this round was able to extend the table lead from two to seven points. However, local rivals EC VSV lost a bit of connection to the leading trio of Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Capitals due to a series of defeats and were now only one point ahead of sixth. The 99ers and the EHC Linz fought head-to-head here, but the Linzers were the more successful team with six wins in this phase and had also been able to leave Ljubljana behind. The Laibacher fought against a clear downward trend, in the course of which games were repeatedly lost relatively significantly.

The KHL Medvešcak Zagreb fared similarly, which in particular could not use the momentum of the games in the 15,000-seat arena Zagreb . Of the four encounters, the first two were narrowly lost, which meant that the points cushion that kept the club on one of the playoff places remained low. HK Jesenice and Alba Volán stayed in the last two places. Both clubs had been able to achieve some respectable successes, however, and in particular Jesenice showed with an away win in Salzburg in the 45th round and a home win over the Capitals that a playoff participation was still possible.

Third round

The last round of the season brought only a few changes in the table. Only in the lower ranks did the four foreign teams fight neck and neck for the last two playoff places. For a short time Medvešcak Zagreb had slipped out of the playoff ranks after a few defeats and had to give way to HK Jesenice. For Alba Volán the fight was over a few rounds before the end, but the club said goodbye to the season with some unexpected victories, including against Salzburg.

Just before the end of the regular round, the EC VSV made people sit up and take notice with a change of coach: Johan Strömwall voluntarily resigned after a few serious defeats and gave way to his former assistant coach Michael Stewart , who succeeded in the last few laps, the last offensive of his hardly existing Reinforce teams.

Notable facts

  • The Canadian striker François Fortier from Vienna Capitals set a new record for the top Austrian league with 48 goals in 51 games. The previous record holder Mike Craig had it in the 2006/07 season - also for the Capitals - in the basic season to 43 hits and scored 46 goals in the entire season.
  • With Fabian Weinhandl from the Graz 99ers, for the first time in the history of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, a goalkeeper played the entire basic round without ever being represented by a backup. In total, Weinhandl achieved a playing time of 3251 minutes and 47 seconds in the 54 games. His team recorded the fewest goals against in the regular season.
  • The category most punished players also set a new record : Capitals striker Benoît Gratton had a total of 247 penalty minutes in 45 missions, including three game and one match penalty, as well as five disciplinary penalties. The previous record holder in this category was Kelsey Wilson , who had achieved 231 penalty minutes at Red Bull Salzburg the year before.
  • A new EBEL record was also achieved in the fair play rating: the Hungarian club Alba Volán Székesfehérvár undercut the previous mark of the Graz 99ers from the previous season with an average of only 13.57 penalty minutes per game , which had an average of 13.60.
  • The Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb dominated the season in the audience favor: with a total of 211,600 spectators in 27 home games, a club broke the 200,000 mark for the first time. An average of 7,837 spectators came to a game of the bears.
  • Most penalty minutes against a single team in a game were played in the Salzburg vs. EC VSV awarded in round 53 on February 22, 2011. The EC VSV was given a total of 130 penalty minutes. The cause was violent criticism of the referee in overtime; this resulted in four game duration and three disciplinary penalties.

Quarter finals

  • EC KAC - KHL Medveščak Zagreb (final score 4: 1, goal difference 20:18)
The series between the KAC and Medveščak Zagreb had already been classified as very close in advance, despite the table situation of the two clubs. The first two encounters were won by the EC KAC 3-2, even though Zagreb had been in the lead for a long time in both games. The third encounter in Klagenfurt was much clearer at first when the KAC were 4-1 in the front after two thirds. In the final section, however, the Croatians quickly equalized with three goals. The final phase of the game was characterized by an unusually large number of goals and the EC KAC could very narrowly win it. Zagreb achieved their first win in the series in the fourth game, where the club was able to confidently bring a 4-1 lead over time. In the last encounter in Klagenfurt, Zagreb also took a 4-2 lead, but fell behind with 4: 5 in the final section and was only able to equalize just before the end of regular time. In the overtime, the EC KAC won the series.
  • EC Red Bull Salzburg - HDD Olimpija Ljubljana (final score 4: 1, goal difference 19:13)
The first encounter between the two clubs was very close with a 5-4 win for Salzburg in overtime. However, the Red Bulls acted much more disciplined in the following two games and twice defeated Laibach with 5: 1 and 6: 1. There was a scandal before game four of the series: Salzburg did not play for the scheduled match because the safety precautions in the Laibacher Hala Tivoli were found to be inadequate, and they started their journey home. This decision caused great resentment, especially among the fans of the league. The league's penal senate decided to score the game 5-0 and a win for Laibach and fined Salzburg with a fine of 10,000 euros and an obligation to pay damages to the Laibach team. In addition, a resolution was passed according to which, from this point in time, every club that does not appear in a championship game for no reason will be excluded from the current competition. The subsequent final game in Salzburg set a new EBEL record: with a total duration of 95:28 minutes, it was the longest game in league history. Salzburg had gambled away a 2-0 lead in regular time and then needed almost two full thirds to score the decisive goal. The then 21-year-old Slovenian goalkeeper Matija Pintarič saved 78 of the 81 shots fired at his goal.
  • Vienna Capitals - Graz 99ers (final score 4: 0, goal difference 16: 9)
The encounter between the Vienna Capitals and the Graz 99ers was the only one in the quarter-finals to be decided with a sweep. The Vienna Capitals clearly prevailed with four successes in a row. The Graz team got off to a good start in the first game and had a 2-0 lead by half-time, but the Capitals were able to equalize in the second third. The opening goal for the home team fell in the final section; the attempt by Graz to equalize failed and resulted in an empty net goal for Vienna. In the second game the Capitals clearly dominated and led after thirty minutes with four to zero. Former Capitals defender Darcy Werenka scored the consolation goal . The third encounter was a little closer, even if the Viennese were able to gain a clear lead again early on. The final score of 4: 3 in favor of the Capitals lasted from the 39th minute, as none of the teams scored another goal. The last game brought the Graz team a clear lead, similar to the first game, but this only lasted until the middle of the last third; the Capitals scored three quick goals and saved themselves in overtime, where in the 67th minute the game and the series were decided in favor of the Viennese.
  • EC VSV - EHC Linz (final score 4: 1, goal difference 16: 7)
The EC VSV dominated the series very clearly at the beginning, with the team getting two shutout wins at the beginning. In both games, the team of the new coach Michael Stewart acted extremely confidently, goalkeeper Bernhard Starkbaum saved a total of seventy shots on his goal in both games. Only in the third game did the Linzers score their first goal, and until just before the end of the game, the team was just 3: 4 behind. However, Villach scored an Empty Net hit and decided the game for themselves. In the fourth game, the Linzers managed a shutout and thus the first win in the series. Villach then achieved the decisive fourth victory with 5-2 on their own ice.

Semifinals

  • EC KAC - EC VSV (final score: 4: 1, goal difference: 19:12)
The semi-final series between EC KAC and EC VSV was the first playoff match between the two clubs since the final series in the 2003/04 season . Although the media expected a fairly even series and the EC VSV, somewhat surprisingly, was able to win the first game clearly 5: 2 on Klagenfurt ice, the EC KAC ultimately decided the semi-finals with 4: 1 wins. The Villachers acted weaker than the competitor over the entire series despite good games at times and had to accept the injury of their first goalkeeper Bernhard Starkbaum in the penultimate encounter, who knuckled over during a defensive action and suffered a ligament stretch. Substitute Gert Prohaska , who had previously held the role of A goalie for years, did not act at the height of his ability and received some avoidable goals. All in all, the last two games in particular were clearly in favor of the EC KAC, which was able to secure the series victory early.
  • EC Red Bull Salzburg - EV Vienna Capitals (final score: 4: 3, goal difference: 25:27)
The semifinal series between the reigning champions and the Vienna Capitals, who had been eliminated four times in their history against Salzburg in the semifinals, was much closer. Although the Red Bulls were able to win their first game in a sovereign manner and were only defeated in overtime in the second game, a very close series developed in the course of which the home team won the day. The high point in the meantime was the 9: 1 victory of the Capitals in the fourth encounter, which was made possible thanks to the strong, closed team management of the Viennese and sometimes very poor defensive work by the Salzburg team. The Capitals had already lost their top scorer François Fortier to an injury in the sixth game . In the all-important game seven, Benoît Gratton was eliminated early on after a serious, unpunished foul by Daniel Welser , who was subsequently suspended for eight games for the offense. Salzburg ultimately won game seven and thus secured their sixth finals in a row.

final

Thomas Koch scored the EC Red Bull Salzburg in the overtime of the last game to the fourth championship title.

The match between EC KAC and EC Red Bull Salzburg came about as the most likely final pairing that the media had predicted. The odds were considered equal. The first game already indicated a close series with the 6: 5 home win of the EC KAC. In the second game, the Salzburg team equalized in the series with a 6-3 win. The 5-2 win in Klagenfurt brought the Bulls the necessary away win very early on in the series: the Salzburg team acted as a much more efficient team, the EC KAC was unable to counter the guests, who were particularly well positioned in terms of defenses.

The fourth game showed for the first time in the series a KAC that was at least visually equal. After the Klagenfurters took the lead at half time, the Salzburg team equalized just before the end of the game. In the first overtime of the series, the two Canadians Tyler Scofield and Tyler Spurgeon scored the winning goal , which brought the Klagenfurt back home rights. In the following encounter, the series was finally turned to a 3-2 intermediate result in favor of the EC KAC. In the course of the game, however, there was a highly controversial scene when the referees canceled Mike Craig's regular goal to make it 2-1 for alleged offside after a violent protest from Salzburg.

A similar scene followed in the sixth game, in which the reigning champions were able to equalize: when the score was 4: 2 in favor of Salzburg, the EC KAC did not score an underpaid goal for the 3: 4 goal in the last third, as it was a skate goal acted.

In the all-important seventh game in Klagenfurt, both teams presented themselves as equal over long stretches, even though the Salzburg team scored twice in the course of the game. Shortly before the end, another normal goal was canceled: this time it was Salzburg, whose goal to make it 3-2 was not given by Thomas Koch because of the goal area offside. However, Koch faked a shot by Ryan Duncan to win in the third minute of extra time after the KAC had not been able to use a 4v3 superiority situation that lasted for a minute and 48 seconds at the beginning of overtime. The Salzburg team won the fourth championship title in their club history.

Audience numbers

After the league was able to attract more than a million spectators for the first time last year, this record has been improved somewhat this season. Mainly responsible for this was the Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb , which was the first club to break the 200,000 spectator mark with an average of 7,786 spectators per game. With a total of 1,098,846 spectators, the league retained its seventh place among the European leagues in this ranking list, which was maintained by the IIHF, in the previous year from the Slovnaft Extraliga .

TV exploitation controversy

On 16 February 2010, announced that the Pay TV transmitter Sky wanted to extend its cooperation with Erste Bank Liga, to the 2014/15 season, making rumors about a complete acquisition of the rights by the private channel Servus TV initially held to be unfounded had. However, there should be a new regulation that would allow Servus TV to broadcast several games on Free TV. The right of post-exploitation should also be revised in order to make it possible for third broadcasters to carry out more detailed ice hockey coverage, which was previously difficult to do. In April, however, it was announced that the league organization had given the TV rights to The Sportsman Media Group for the 2010/11 season . As a partner of the company, Servus TV should broadcast at least 21 Sunday games as part of the “Sunday Hockey Night”. In the play-offs , one game per game day and, in the event of play-offs, this should be broadcast in a conference call via the TV station.

However, this contract was concluded prematurely. As it turned out, Sky had the opportunity to meet every offer from another bidder with a correction of its own offer, which the broadcaster did in May. However, the pay TV broadcaster withdrew its offer for just under a week for financial reasons, so Servus TV was finally awarded the contract.

Others

In addition to the TV broadcasts, the games of the two Carinthian clubs EC KAC and EC VSV will continue to be broadcast on Radio Carinthia .
