Essex is the brand name of automobiles, which from 1919 to 1922 of which was Essex Motor Company and to 1932 by the Hudson Motor Car Co. in Detroit were produced. At the time, the Essex was seen as a small car for an affordable price. The Essex ushered in the standard introduction of closed sedans, instead of the open touring cars that were common up until then.

description

Originally the Essex was a product of the Essex Motor Company , which however belonged 100% to the automobile manufacturer Hudson. Essex Motor Company rented the Studebaker factory in Detroit to make their cars. This company was dissolved in 1922 and the Essex officially became what it actually always was: a product by Hudson .

The Essex brand cars were designed as rather low-priced vehicles that were affordable for the average family. They were very reliable; its capabilities have been tested and approved by the American Automobile Association (AAA), as well as the United States Postal Services.

At first Essex offered a range of touring cars - the most common design for a car at the time. A closed limousine was added in 1920 and a closed transport car was introduced in 1922, which cost US $ 1,495 - only US $ 300 more than the touring car. As early as 1925, the price of the transport car was below that of the touring car. While Henry Ford is credited with inventing the affordable automobile, Essex made the closed car affordable.

Essex sales were impressive through the 1920s and into 1931, and only then fell. In 1932 a newly designed Essex was presented under the name Essex-Terraplane (a play on words with "airplane" (English "airplane")). In 1933 the name Essex was dropped and the car was only called Terraplane .
