The J.League Division 1 2004 was the twelfth season of the highest division of the Japanese J.League and the sixth under the name Division 1 . Sixteen clubs took part in it. The regular season was played in two half-series and began on March 13, 2004. After the end of the second half-series on November 28, 2003, the winners of the two half-series, Yokohama F. Marinos and Urawa Red Diamonds , played in two games for the Japanese championship . These finals were played on December 5th and 11th after the regular season. After both teams won their respective home game 1-0 and no decision was made in extra time for the second leg, a penalty shoot-out was used to determine the title holder, with the happier end for defending champion Yokohama.
By expanding the field of participants to eighteen teams for the 2005 season , there was no relegation this season after the last of the overall table, Kashiwa Reysol, prevailed in two relegation games against the third of the J.League Division 2 in 2004 , Avispa Fukuoka .
mode
As in the previous season , the clubs faced each other twice, once at home and once away, but both half-series were counted as separate championships.
There were three points for a win; in the case of a draw, each team received one point. The table for each semi-series was created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
After the end of a half series, the club qualified with the most points for the finals of the Japanese championship. The winner of the finals qualified as Japanese champions for the 2005 AFC Champions League . To determine the two relegated teams, a table was formed over the entire season after the end of the season according to the same criteria as stated above, the two worst teams had to go into the second division.
Attendees
A total of sixteen teams took part in the season. No longer there were the bottom of the previous season, Kyōto Purple Sanga and the penultimate Vegalta Sendai , both of whom had to relegate to the J.League Division 2 in 2004 . Kyōto and Sendai had been promoted to Division 1 together two years earlier.
The two relegated teams were replaced by Albirex Niigata , the 2003 division champion , and the runner-up Sanfrecce Hiroshima . Albirex played for the first time in its history in the top Japanese division, Sanfrecce, however, managed to return immediately after relegation from the House of Lords in 2002.

Participation in the relegation games against third-placed J.League Division 2: Kashiwa Reysol |
Suntory Championship
For the first time in three years the finals of the Suntory Championship took place again, defending champion Yokohama F. Marinos met the Urawa Red Diamonds. Urawa, trained by Guido Buchwald , equalized Yokohama's 1-0 victory in their own stadium a week later after 90 minutes. The subsequent extra time was inconclusive, so the penalty shoot-out had to bring the decision. The Reds were allowed to start here, but their first shooter, Marcus Tulio Tanaka, missed. A little later, the Brazilian Dutra sealed the renewed championship for F. Marinos with his decisive penalty, after the future Bundesliga player Makoto Hasebe had forgiven immediately before .

Relegation
In the relegation for a place in the J.League for the coming season, which was held for the first time, Kashiwa Reysol met Avispa Fukuoka , third in Division 2, last in the overall table . The two games were altogether a one-sided affair; after goals from Harutaka Ōno and Tatsuya Yazawa for Reysol in the first leg held in Fukuoka, Yūji Unozawa and Yasuhiro Hato made it clear that the favorites were not relegated a week later in front of their home crowd.
