history
Saint-Martin-d'Hères was built around the parish of Saint-Martin , which was built in 1100 on a marshy and reed plain. In the 12th century, the bishops of Grenoble built a castle on a slightly elevated spot, which was their summer residence until the middle of the 14th century. Between 1488 and 1494, the Grenoble bishop Laurent I. Alleman had a monastery built near his castle for the order of the Paulans founded by Franz von Paola .
At the end of the 19th century, the city experienced its first strong development with the industrialization of the Croix-Rouge district . The 1950s and 1960s are the beginning of a new era: the exceptionally strong increase in the population and the establishment of the Grenoble University campus changed the cityscape.
The bowl stone Pierre du Bigot is located in the village .
