George Washington Smith

George Washington Smith (born August 18, 1846 in Putnam County , Ohio , †  November 30, 1907 in Murphysboro , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1907 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1950, George Smith moved with his father to Wayne County , Illinois, where he attended public schools. He then attended McKendree College in Lebanon in 1868 , but then did an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. After studying law at Indiana University in Bloomington and his admission as a lawyer in 1870, he began to work in Murphysboro in this profession. Between 1880 and 1888 he held the position of Master in Chancery . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1888 congressional election , Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded John R. Thomas on March 4, 1889 . After nine re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on November 30, 1907 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1895 Smith represented the 22nd district of his state as the successor to Andrew J. Hunter . From 1895 he was chairman of the committee on private land claims.
