List of the largest islands in the world

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The islands of the earth
Greenland, the largest island on earth

The list of the largest islands on earth contains the islands of the earth with an area of more than 1000 km².

methodology

To compile this list, the Wikipedia encyclopedias were used for all languages in which a similar list is available or which contain an article on one of the islands listed below. In the case of different sizes, the decisive factor was the value in whose language area the island is located. That means, the Russian Wikipedia was authoritative for all Russian islands , for all Indonesian islands the Wikipedias of various languages that are spoken in Indonesia , for all Canadian islandsthe English Wikipedia etc. Only where these reference values were obviously wrong were the Wikipedias of other languages used or further research was done. Nevertheless, some sizes are only estimates; where this is the case or which islands have seriously different sizes are documented in the notes.

Sea islands

The largest sea, ocean and ice shelf islands are listed here. This list claims to be complete. The Australian mainland, along with Africa-Eurasia , America and Antarctica, is one of the four main land masses and is therefore not considered an island.

Inland and Delta Islands

This list includes some of the largest river , inland sea and delta islands on earth, as well as islands that are only separated from the mainland by narrow rivers or narrow river-like inlets. It is not complete. Large delta islands, which may reach an area of more than 1000 km², still exist in the deltas of the Nile , Niger , Danube , Meghna (Ganges / Brahmaputra), Jana , Indigirka , Kolyma and Lena .

There are other river islands over 1000 km² for example in the lower reaches of the Ob (three pieces), but these are probably not named. Land masses separated by river bifurcations, such as a large part of North South America over the Brazo Casiquiare , were not taken into account.

In the following list, delta islands are highlighted in green, sea islands in blue and islands separated from the sea by rivers are highlighted in yellow.

Footnotes

  1. Greenland - estimate. Since large parts of the coast are covered with ice, the actual size of the island has probably never been determined exactly. The size of the autonomous region of Greenland is 2,166,086 km². The surrounding islands must be deducted from this value.
  2. Borneo - different size information: 748.168 km².
  3. Madagascar - approximate value. The value of 587,041 km² cited in many sources is the size of the state of Madagascar, not the island of Madagascar. The size of the surrounding islands must be subtracted from this value. Since the size of all islands is not known, the actual size of the island of Madagascar is rather smaller than 586,427 km².
  4. Honshū - different sizes: 225,800 km², 230,316 km².
  5. ^ Great Britain - Probable size. The value in the English Wikipedia is wrong. The size can be roughly calculated using: England + Scotland + Wales = 229,040 km² - Hebrides - Orkney Islands - Shetland Islands = 219,299 km² - other islands around Great Britain = 216,777. km². (The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands do not belong to the United Kingdom, including England. They are always counted separately as outer areas .)
  6. Sulawesi - different size specification: 180,681 km².
  7. New Zealand South Island - different size: 145,836 km².
  8. Java - different size specification: 138,794 km².
  9. New Zealand North Island - different size: 111,583 km².
  10. Luzon - different size: 109,965 km².
  11. Iceland - estimate. The size of the state of Iceland is 103,125 km². Surrounding islands must be deducted. Different information 101,826 km².
  12. Mindanao - different size: 97,530 km².
  13. Ireland - different size: 81,638 km².
  14. Hokkaidō - different size: 78,719 km².
  15. Hispaniola - The value of 76,480 km² given in many sources is the total area of the states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic , not the island of Hispaniola.
  16. Tasmania - The deviating values in German and English. WP (68,401 km²) are the size of the province of Tasmania, not the island of Tasmania.
  17. Nowaya Zemlya North Island - different size: 47,079 km².
  18. Tierra del Fuego - Deviating size: 47,401 km².
  19. Spitzbergen - different size information: 39,044 km².
