The Hanseatic city of Stralsund , which was granted the town charter in 1234, has been the scene of many important events in the course of its history. It was also one of the most important cities of the Hanseatic League , later the center of Swedish Pomerania and one of the main towns in Pomerania. As such, it was of great economic and military importance. Therefore Stralsund has always been a city in which important personalities lived and worked. Many people who later became important grew up here and received their basic knowledge at the Stralsund grammar school .

14th Century
- Nikolaus Lilienfeld († after 1394)
- Watchmaker, engineer and astronomer. He built and completed the astronomical clock in St. Nikolai (Stralsund) in 1394 and, based on comparisons of shapes, is believed to be the builder of other monumental clocks in the Baltic Sea region. His portrait handed down in Stralsund is considered the oldest watchmaker portrait in the German-speaking area.
- Karsten Sarnow († 1393)
- The dressmaker, who also made a name for himself in the fight against pirates on the Baltic Sea, took over the mayor's office in 1390. In 1391 he forced a reform of the Stralsund city constitution. Two years later the patricians had Sarnow executed.
- Bertram Wulflam († 1394)
- Wulflam was Mayor of Stralsund from 1364 to 1391. He came from the merchant family of the same name. The Wulflamhaus , an imposing gabled house opposite the town hall , is a reminder of the great importance of the Wulflams for Stralsund, which was expressed in the Peace of Stralsund in 1370 . The bank of the Frankenteich was named Wulflamufer in his honor .
15th century
- Otto Voge (* 1419; † 1475)
- Has been a member of the Stralsund Council since 1432. He was elected mayor in 1443 and made great contributions to the administration and fortification of the city.
- Sabel Siegfried (* 1437; † 1491)
- Born in Stralsund, he was councilor and mayor of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. As a lawyer he worked as an expert in the War of the Szczecin Succession .
- Wichmann Kruse (born January 11, 1464; † 1534)
- The Roman Catholic theologian taught canon law as a legal scholar and was the rectorate of the University of Greifswald nine times.
- Johann Berckmann (born in the last quarter of the 15th century; † March 12, 1560)
- The theologian and chronicler, who probably came from Stralsund, preached the doctrine of the Reformation in Stralsund . He wrote a city chronicle covering the years 1510 to 1560.
- Christian Ketelhot (* around 1492; † 1542)
- The theologian was one of the city's reformers . In 1535 he followed Johannes Knipstro to the post of superintendent.
- Johannes Knipstro (May 1, 1497 - October 4, 1556)
- The theologian and reformer worked as a Protestant preacher in Stralsund. His proclamation had the consequence that the Evangelicals got the majority in the city government. Stralsund became a Protestant city. Johannes Aepinus drew up the church order, which was carried out immediately. While he was initially a deacon at St. Marien , he was soon to become the first pastor at St. Nikolai . From here he made numerous trips to work for the Reformation in the Pomeranian Church. He came first among the Pomeranian preachers.
- Johannes Aepinus (1499 - May 13, 1553)
- The theologian was the rector of a private school on St. Johanniskirchhof from 1524 to 1528 . Aepinus was commissioned by the city council of Stralsund to develop a reformist church order, which was introduced on November 5, 1525 and is known as the first evangelical church order.
- Zutfeld Wardenberg († 1527)
- Wardenberg came from an old Stralsund patrician family and was de facto Bishop of Schwerin in 1516.
16th Century
- Nikolaus Gentzkow (December 6, 1502 - February 24, 1576)
- The lawyer and chronicler was mayor of Stralsund for 20 years. His diary provides a precise description of life at that time.
- Thomas Kantzow (around 1505; † September 25, 1542)
- Born in Stralsund, he was a German chronicler and historian. He collected historical news about Pomerania. Among other things, he has further developed Johannes Bugenhagen's Pommeria , so that his work has secured a place for himself in German historical literature. His Low German script with the title "Fragmenta der Pommerischen Geschichte" was the first German chronicle of Pomerania that reached from the beginning of the history of Pomerania until 1534. In 1538 he converted this into a High German chronicle that includes eleven books.

- The terracotta sculptor created wall tiles for the Minervahaus on the Alter Markt.
- Bartholomäus Sastrow (* August 21, 1520 - † February 7, 1603)
- Sastrow moved to Stralsund in 1555, where he became city councilor in 1562 and mayor in 1578. His autobiography "Bartholomäi Sastrowen Her Come, Birth and Course of His Whole Life (1595–96)" is considered the most important work of autobiographical prose of the 16th century.

- Lambert Steinwich (born May 19, 1571, † August 13, 1629)
- The German lawyer, diplomat and politician was Mayor of Stralsund from 1616 to 1629. During the siege of Stralsund in the Thirty Years' War in 1628, he conducted negotiations with Albrecht von Wallenstein . At the same time Steinwich secretly negotiated with Danes and Swedes, with whose help Stralsund could be successfully defended. Today a memorial created by the sculptor Wilhelm Jacobi on the Wulflamufer commemorates him. Furthermore, a Stralsund school and street bear his name.

- Joachim Andreae (* around 1586; † May 2, 1655)
- Andreae, born in Stralsund, went to study in the Netherlands. He became Professor of Law at the University of Franeker and was then for more than 25 years a judge at the High Council, the highest court in Friesland. During the Thirty Years War he traveled as a diplomat to negotiate in Poland, Denmark and Sweden. As President of the States General, he signed the ratification document for the Peace of Munster in 1648.

- Ferdinand von Schill (January 6, 1776 - May 31, 1809)
- The Prussian officer, fighting against foreign rule, entered Stralsund on May 25th with his regiment. Despite all warnings, Schill was determined to keep the place by all means. On May 31, 1809 Stralsund was stormed by the 6,000-strong troops of the Dutch general Gratien and the Danish general Ewald. Schill fell apart and unnoticed in Fährstrasse. His head was sent to the King of Westphalia, his body was buried in the St. Jürgen cemetery. He was later revered as a "freedom hero". In Stralsund, a memorial in the Schillanlage, a memorial stone at the place where he fell, his tomb in the cemetery and a street and school named after him remind of him.
- Paul Struck (6 December 1776 - 14 May 1820)
- The composer Paul Struck was a son of the Stralsund book printer Christian Lorenz Struck. Before 1800 he went to Vienna and became a student of Joseph Haydn . He composed songs, dances and chamber music.

- Born in Stralsund, he attended high school in the Katharinenkloster. He became a theologian and professor of aesthetics in Greifswald.

- The Bavarian Catholic theologian was a priest at the Trinity Church in Stralsund from 1803 .
- Lars Jacob von Röök (born October 14, 1778 - † February 6, 1867)
- The Stralsund-born son of the architect and fortress builder Carl Fredrik von Röök was an artist and architect. He worked as court manager in Stockholm and was the founder of the Swedish National Museum.

- The conductor and composer received his training in violin and composition in Stralsund.
- Gustav Boye af Gennäs (May 2, 1779 - July 29, 1834)
- Born in Stralsund, the son of Stralsund's postal director, he entered Swedish military service and became Stralsund's commander in 1814. With the handover of Swedish Pomerania to Prussia, he switched to the Prussian military service, was temporarily commander of the Stralsund Landwehr Regiment and received his departure as a major general in 1824.
