George W. Collins (politician)
George Washington Collins (born March 5, 1925 in Chicago , Illinois , † December 8, 1972 there ) was an American politician . Between 1970 and 1972 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .
Career
George Collins attended Waller High School and then studied business law at Northwestern University . During the Second World War he served in the Pacific with the pioneers of the US Army . After that he held several local offices in his homeland. He has worked at Cook County Police Headquarters and the City Court, among others . He was also a member of the local health committee. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1964 to 1970 he was a member of the Chicago City Council.
After the death of MP Daniel J. Ronan , Collins was elected in the due by-election for the sixth seat of Illinois as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on November 3, 1970. Collins was also elected to Congress for the next two terms. This allowed him to stay there until his death on December 8, 1972. That day he was the victim of a plane crash in Chicago. His wife Cardiss Collins (1931-2013) was then elected to Congress in his place. The electoral district was renumbered to the seventh district.
