Jesse Louis Jackson, Jr. (born March 11, 1965 in Greenville , South Carolina ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the US House of Representatives for Illinois from 1995 to 2012 .

biography

The son of civil rights activist and later Democratic presidential candidate Jesse Jackson studied after school at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University , where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) in 1987 . He then completed postgraduate studies in theology at Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS) in 1989 with a Master of Arts (MA). He finished another postgraduate law degree at the College of Law at the University of Chicago in 1993 with a Juris Doctor (JD).

After that, he began his political career as secretary of the Assembly of African American ( Black Caucus ) of the Democratic National Committee . At the same time, he was project manager from 1993 to 1995 of the Rainbow Coalition founded by his father , of which he is a member as well as of PUSH ( People United to Serve Humanity ), an organization also founded by his father in 1971.

Following the resignation of the former deputies Mel Reynolds , he was first a member of the 1995 US House of Representatives voted and represented there of 12 December 1995 to 21 November 2012 the second congressional district of Illinois. He was safely elected to another term of office on November 6, 2012 with 63:23 percent of the vote, but announced his resignation a little later. In August 2013, he and his wife were sentenced to prison terms. Together they embezzled around $ 750,000 in campaign contributions for private purposes. Among the expenses were fur coats, stays in Disneyland and most importantly memorabilia from Bruce Lee and Michael Jackson . Jesse Jackson was sentenced to 30 months and his wife to 12 months in prison. In order to pay the procedural costs and damages, the items acquired with the misappropriated funds were auctioned.
