Matthias
Matthias ( Greek Ματθίας Matthias , Hebrew name מתיתיהו Matityahu, Mattithiah , Latin Matthias ) is a male given name .
Origin and meaning
Matthias is a short form of the name Mattatias , the Greek form of the Hebrew name Mattitjahu (מתתיהו).
Mattitjahu means “given by YHWH ”, which is often modified in modern times into “God's gift”. The name form Matthew is derived from the same Hebrew name. However, the distinction between Matthias and Matthew does not exist in every language. Thus Matthias and Matthew are in, for example, the English often uniform with Matthew translated.
Juxtaposition
English, French and Polish also know and clearly distinguish the shape from one another. The distinction is not so easy, however, as the ending (e.g. ~ ias or ~ æus ) is often missing and the phonetic impression can easily merge. In English in particular, in addition to the most common form of fusion, Matthew, there are also numerous individually adapted forms, both as first name and surname, and also short forms (mostly Matt ) that have been integrated from other European languages (see Wikipedia). In Hebrew, the spellings of the signs necessary for the distinction only differ by a comma or, depending on the reading, have an additional syllable of the form thi-a with them.
