The striker and senior international has been under contract with Paris Saint-Germain in French Ligue 1 since August 2017 after the most expensive transfer in football history to date, amounting to 222 million euros .

His biggest success at club level so far was winning the UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona in 2015, for which Neymar played from 2013 to 2017. At international level he won a. a. the FIFA Confederations Cup and Olympic gold .

Career

FC Santos

Neymar (2011) against FC Barcelona

Neymar was born in poor conditions in Mogi das Cruzes near the Brazilian metropolis São Paulo and grew up in Praia Grande . He joined FC Santos in 2003 at the age of eleven and was considered a “jewel” by the various coaches at the club. He made the leap into the first team in 2009 and was used regularly in both the São Paulo state championship and the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol . Since then he has been considered a great talent and has been designated as the successor to Robinho , which attracted the interest of several top European clubs.

At the age of 14 he completed a training camp at Real Madrid , which immediately piqued the interest of the Spaniards. By paying one million reais (approx. 370,300 euros) to the player, the club management of FC Santos managed to keep Neymar at the club. He then extended his contract with Santos. The release clause from his contract was 45 to 50 million euros. In November 2011, he extended his contract with FC Santos until summer 2014. At the 2011 Copa Libertadores he scored six goals in 13 games and thus had a share in winning the title in the most important competition in South American club football.

In 2011 and 2012, Neymar was named South America's Footballer of the Year .

FC Barcelona

For the 2013/14 season , Neymar moved to Europe in the Spanish Primera División for FC Barcelona , where he received a five-year contract until June 30, 2018. It officially cost 57 million euros, which was the eighth highest at the time . His release clause was EUR 190 million. In January 2014, the club had to admit that the actual transfer fee was 86.2 million euros after Sandro Rosell, the president of FC Barcelona, was charged with misappropriating the club's funds. Rosell then resigned as president of FC Barcelona. In February 2014, the Madrid public prosecutor announced that this transfer would require additional taxes of EUR 13.5 million to be paid. The club officially rejected these allegations and emphasized that the disputed 38 million euros would not have been transfer payments, but salary payments. Based on the prosecution's allegations, the total cost for Neymar could amount to 99.7 million euros and the Neymar transfer could have been the most expensive in history at the time.

Neymar scored his first competitive goal in the first leg of the Spanish Supercup against Atlético Madrid .

In the winning final of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League against Juventus Turin on June 6, 2015 in Berlin, Neymar scored the goal in stoppage time to make it 3-1. With this title, he is the eighth player after Cafu , Juan Pablo Sorín , Dida , Roque Júnior , Carlos Tévez , Walter Samuel and Ronaldinho to have won the highest club title of the continental associations of Latin America ( CONMEBOL ) and Europe ( UEFA ). With the tenth goal, he drew level with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and was with them the most successful goalscorer of the Champions League season 2014/15. In season 2015/16 he won with FC Barcelona, the national  double  of  championship  and  cup . In his last season at FC Barcelona only winning the Spanish Cup could be recorded as a success.

Paris Saint-Germain

On August 2, 2017, FC Barcelona announced that Neymar had decided to leave the club. He was released from training on the same day. On the day pointed Neymar its contractually committed for the then period get-out clause in the amount of 222 million euros to FC Barcelona, which the contract was dissolved. The money was transferred to Neymar from Qatar . In return, he became ambassador for the 2022 World Cup in the same country. The sum made Neymar by far the most expensive football player to date - Paul Pogba , who moved from Juventus Turin to Manchester United last year for EUR 105 million, had previously led this ranking. On the same day, Paris Saint-Germain announced the signing of Neymar. He received a five-year contract dated June 30, 2022. The transfer met with criticism across Europe due to the enormously high transfer fee, which more than doubled the previous transfer record. The French daily Le Figaro noted that football was lapsing into excess. The British Daily Mirror described the transfer fee as insane.

In the 2017/18 season , Neymar scored 19 goals in 20 appearances in Ligue 1 under head coach Unai Emery . There was also an appearance (two goals) in the cup and two appearances (one goal) in the league cup . On February 25, 2018, he suffered a hairline crack in his metatarsal bone in the 3-0 win against Olympique Marseille and had to undergo an operation in Belo Horizonte . In the UEFA Champions League , where he scored six goals in seven games, PSG were knocked out against Real Madrid in the round of 16, with Neymar missing the second leg due to his injury. Until the end of the season, Neymar could not be used. With PSG he won the championship as well as the cup and league cup.

In January 2019, Neymar injured his metatarsus again. PSG announced that Neymar would be out for about ten weeks. As in the previous year, he missed the last 16 of the Champions League, in which PSG were eliminated by Manchester United . Neymar made his comeback in April 2019. In the 2018/19 season , at the end of which only the championship was won, he played under the new head coach Thomas Tuchel in 17 league games in which he scored 15 goals. In the Champions League group stage, Neymar scored 5 goals in 6 games.

In the national team

Neymar at the international match between Brazil and Austria (2014)

With the U-17 selection of Brazil , Neymar took part in the 2009 World Cup. He played in all three games from the start and scored one goal, but retired with his team in the preliminary round.

After the disappointing World Cup in South Africa for the Brazilian national team , where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by the Netherlands, the new coach Mano Menezes nominated talented young players, including Neymar for the first time, and built them into the team. In the first friendly game after the World Cup against the USA , Menezes Neymar started. Neymar scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win. On March 27, 2011, he scored both goals in his third international match in a 2-0 win over Scotland .

In early 2011, Neymar took part in the U-20 South American Championship in Peru . With nine goals he was the top scorer and won the title with his team.

Neymar played all four of the Brazilian team's games at the 2011 Copa America and scored two goals in the preliminary round against Ecuador . In the international match against Germany on August 10, 2011, he scored a goal when the Brazilians lost 3-2 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena . In stoppage time, he made the final score.

In 2012 he took part with the Olympic team at the Olympic Games in London , where Brazil wanted to win the gold medal for the first time. In the final, however, Brazil had to admit defeat to the Mexican team 1: 2 . Neymar appeared in all six games and scored three goals.

In 2013, he took part in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup with the senior national team and scored the first goal in the third minute of the opening game against Japan . With three more goals, he finished third in the scorers list and made a significant contribution to winning the tournament, for which he was named the best player.

On May 8, 2014 he was appointed to the squad for the 2014 World Cup by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari . In the preliminary round matches against Croatia and Cameroon , he scored two goals each and was named Man of the Match . In the quarter-final against Colombia , he suffered through a challenge from Juan Zúñiga a lumbar fracture , which he could not participate in the tournament on.

Before the first game after the World Cup, he was appointed captain of the national team by the new national coach Dunga . In the game against Colombia on September 6, 2014, he scored the 1-0 winner. On October 14, 2014, he scored all four goals in a 4-0 friendly win against Japan .

At the Copa América 2015 , Neymar saw the red card in the second game after an assault with subsequent scuffle and insulted the referee in the hallway to the dressing room, whereupon he was suspended for four games - and thus for the rest of the tournament.

Since Barcelona only wanted to release him for one tournament, Neymar decided not to take part in the Copa América Centenario 2016 in order to represent his country at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . In the semifinals against Honduras he managed to score after 14 seconds and thus scored the fastest goal in Olympic history. As captain of the Olympic team , he led the Brazilians to the Olympic final, where he took the interim 1-0 lead against Germany with a free kick and scored the decisive final goal on penalties to make it 5-4. This was the first time that Brazil became Olympic champion.

On November 10, 2016, he scored his 50th international goal in a 3-0 World Cup qualifier against Argentina .

In 2018 Neymar took part in the World Cup in Russia with Brazil . He played in all five games and scored two goals. In the quarterfinals, he left with his team, after a 2: 1 defeat against Belgium from.

As part of the preparation for friendly matches against the national teams of the USA and El Salvador in September 2018, Neymar was appointed captain of the team by national coach Tite on a permanent basis. Since June 2016, Tite had left the armband to 16 players, one of which was Neymar. Tite justified the step by stating that he had noticed Neymar's reflection and insight and that Neymar had all the prerequisites to take this step forward. Following the appointment of the squad for the 2019 Copa America , Tite announced on May 27, 2019 that Dani Alves would lead the team into the competition as captain. The association did not give a reason. Media speculation suggests that Neymar's resignation was related to his emotional responses over the past few months. On June 6, 2019, the CBF announced that Neymar tore a ligament in the ankle of his right foot in the test match against Qatar on June 5 and will therefore not take part in the Copa America games. After an examination by the doctors at his PSG club, they found a severe sprain on the outside of the foot.

Style of play

Neymar plays primarily as a left winger or occasionally as a central striker or midfielder and has been described as a true phenomenon. He plays both for Paris Saint-Germain and in the national team on the left side forward in the 4-3-3 system . Due to his speed dribbling and his game building skills, he likes to pull into the middle or dribble his opponents on the left side. This position allows him to shoot with his stronger right foot or create opportunities for his teammates. Neymar is known for his typical Brazilian football, which is characterized by dribbling skills, ball acceptance and play structure and is compared to that of Ronaldinho . His skills are creativity, passing, finishing, dribbling, feinting and technique. Although he generally plays right-footed, he is able to score goals with both feet and his head. Also, like Lionel Messi, he is a precise free kick taker. He once said, “I always try to perfect everything - dribbling, shooting, head and control. You can always improve ”. Neymar said he was spurred on by Andrés Iniesta , Xavi , Lionel Messi , Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney .

Private

family

Neymar's father Neymar da Silva Santos was a professional footballer and also began his career with the FC Santos junior team, his mother's name is Nadine Gonçalves da Silva Santos. His parents are of Brazilian descent, with the family on his father's side coming from the city of Santos . Neymar Jr. has a sister, Raffaela da Silva Santos, who among other things works as a model .

Neymar had a lengthy on-off relationship with Brazilian actress Bruna Marquezine from 2012 to 2017 . From a previous relationship with his childhood friend Carolina Dantas, he has a son who was born in São Paulo in August 2011 .

social commitment

In 2013, Neymar founded the institution Neymar Jr, an organization that helps children in need. In 2015 he and Lionel Messi auctioned a hand-signed jersey from the Champions League semi-finals for a good cause, the proceeds of which were made by Kinderlachen e. V. benefited.

Tax affairs

In February 2016, it became known that Neymar and his family are said to have evaded around fourteen million euros through bogus companies between 2011 and 2013 . The Brazilian tax authorities then frozen three times the amount allegedly evaded. According to Brazilian law, this amount is set as a penalty in the event of willful tax evasion. His private jet and yacht are affected by the measures. In February 2016, the Brazilian tax authorities blocked Neymar's entire assets of over € 40 million as part of their investigation.

The Spanish judiciary is also investigating Neymar, for example when he switched from FC Santos to FC Barcelona part of his transfer fee was paid to his marketing companies. The problem with this is that lower tax rates are applied under Spanish tax law. According to the footballer's lawyers, the allegations are baseless. In November 2016, the Spanish prosecutor called for Neymar to be imprisoned for two years and a fine of ten million euros for corruption and concealment of the real transfer costs.

Rape charge

On June 1, 2019, Brazilian model Najila Trindade accused Neymar of physical violence and rape in São Paulo . The two initially met by mutual agreement on May 15, 2019 at his expense in a hotel in Paris after they had met on social media. Over the course of the evening, the drunk Neymar was alleged to have become increasingly aggressive and violent and is said to have forced Trindade to have sexual intercourse. On the day the allegations were announced, Neymar denied them and published the chat history on Instagram, including intimate photos he had received from Trindade. Since Neymar could have violated her right to privacy by publishing the pictures, he was summoned by the police in Rio de Janeiro on June 7, 2019.

In response to Neymar's defense, Trindade gave an interview to Brazilian television broadcaster SBT in which she clarified further details and reiterated her allegations. In his first sporting appearance after the allegations, Neymar injured himself in a preparatory game for the Copa America 2019 against Qatar after a few minutes of play and had to be replaced. He was removed from the continental championship squad due to the injury. The vice-president of the Brazilian football association CBF Francisco Noveletto had previously advised Neymar against participating in the tournament due to the media and mental pressure. President Bolsonaro publicly sided with Neymar when he visited him in hospital shortly after the injury.

In August 2019, the public prosecutor asked the competent court to terminate the case due to a lack of evidence.

Others

Neymar plays a monk in the 6th and 8th episodes of the 3rd part of the Spanish Netflix series House of Money .

In 2005, at the age of only 13, he entered into a supplier contract with the US sporting goods manufacturer Nike . At the end of August 2020, Nike announced the split after 15 years of collaboration.
