George M. O'Brien (1985)

George Miller O'Brien (born June 17, 1917 in Chicago , Illinois , †  July 17, 1986 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 1986 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George O'Brien attended St. Ignatius Grammar School and the Loyola Academy in Chicago. He then studied until 1939 at Northwestern University in Evanston . During the Second World War he was a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Air Corps . After studying law at Yale University and being admitted to the bar in 1947, he began working in this profession in Chicago. Between 1956 and 1964 he served on the Will County County Council . In 1970 and 1971 he was a legal advisor to the Northeast Illinois Planning Commission. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . He was also a member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1970 and 1971 .

In the 1972 congressional election , O'Brien was elected to the 17th  constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Leslie C. Arends on January 3, 1973 . After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on July 17, 1986 . Since 1983 he represented there as the successor of Ed Derwinski the fourth district of his state. During his time as a congressman, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell among other things .
