López is a patronymic educated Spanish surname . Outside of the Spanish-speaking area, it often occurs in the Lopez spelling without acute . The Portuguese form of the name is Lopes .

Origin and meaning

López is derived from the nowadays uncommon Spanish first name Lope , whose origin goes back to the Latin word lupus ("wolf"). The -ez at the end of the name means " son of ... " in Spanish surnames .
