López is a patronymic educated Spanish surname . Outside of the Spanish-speaking area, it often occurs in the Lopez spelling without acute . The Portuguese form of the name is Lopes .

Origin and meaning

López is derived from the nowadays uncommon Spanish first name Lope , whose origin goes back to the Latin word lupus ("wolf"). The -ez at the end of the name means " son of ... " in Spanish surnames .

In Spain , López is the fifth most common surname; more than 870,000 residents have it first in their compound surname . In Mexico , the name is the fourth most common surname in the country; 2.2 million Mexicans each have their patronymic (first surname) or mother's name (second surname) López . In the United States , the name is the 12th most common family name and 4th most popular Hispanic surname with around 875,000 people, of whom about 93% identify as Hispanics .
