At the XXI. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , 37 competitions - 23 for men and 14 for women - were held in athletics . The venue was the Olympic Stadium .

Attendees

As has been the case several times before, there were also considerable problems and special cases with regard to the participation of different nations when these Olympic Games were held. Was not invited again the People's Republic of China , which continues not a member of the IOC was, but also the Republic of China (Taiwan) took in contrast to previous years not participate because officials did not want to accept that their country under the name of Taiwan was in the process should. The greatest extent, however, was the issue of the South African dispute . The country itself was still not allowed because of its apartheid policy . Now numerous African countries have also called for the exclusion of New Zealand because a New Zealand hockey team had competed against a South African team. Since the IOC did not meet this requirement, a total of 22 countries, including 21 from Africa, boycotted these games, which v. a. in athletics meant that numerous fellow favorites were not at the start.

The divided Germany now competed for the third time with two independent teams. The official names were as four years ago: 'Deutschland' or 'Germany' or 'Allemagne' - 'GER' for short - for the Federal Republic of Germany and for the GDR ' German Democratic Republic 'or' German Democratic Republic 'or' République fédérale d'Allemagne '- short' DDR 'or' GDR '.

Stadion

The Montreal Olympic Stadium met the most modern requirements, but was only completed at the very last minute. Before the start of the competitions, the construction work was so far behind schedule that the IOC had even considered having the Olympic Games held at a replacement location. It didn't come to that in the end. The 400-meter circular track and the run-up tracks for the various jumping and throwing competitions were made of plastic, as they have been at all major events, and met the highest standards. As is now customary, eight lanes were available so that eight participants could take part in the finals. This was also practiced in the throwing disciplines as well as in the long jump and triple jump for the last three finals.

measuring technology

The use of electronic measuring instruments had meanwhile become standard, both for the times of the runners and the distances achieved in jumping and throwing. The running and walking times were officially given in hundredths of a second, except for routes of more than ten kilometers. In the discus , hammer and javelin throw , the distance achieved was rounded to a fifth of a centimeter as before.

Competitions

There was only one change in the competition: in walking, a form of competition that was then reserved exclusively for men, the 50 km route was canceled. The only walking competition here in Montreal was the 20 km walk , as usual on the street. However, this cancellation of the long walking distance was unique. In 1980 the discipline was again part of the Olympic program. Until today - as of December 2017 - nothing has changed in the field of Olympic men's disciplines.

For women, however, there were numerous other additions to be made in the future. Her longest running competition was still the 1,500 meter run . That should change from 1984 . From then on, additional longer distances were gradually added to the Olympic program and also in the jumps, throws, in walking and in all-around competitions, there should be a gradual adjustment to the competition catalog for men.

Sporting successes

The level of performance was also very high at these Olympic Games. There were nine new or discontinued world records in nine disciplines. In a further thirteen disciplines, the Olympic record was improved or equalized fifteen times.

The most successful nation in athletics was for the first time the GDR , which was able to record eleven Olympic victories and eight silver and eight bronze medals. The United States , which was ahead in this regard up to and including 1968 , was able to move up one rank from third place, which it had reached in 1972 . They received six gold, eight silver and eight bronze. It was followed by the Soviet Union , which was in the lead in the Nations Cup at the last games, with four gold, four silver and ten bronze medals. Poland had three Olympic athletics champions, while Finland and Cuba had two each. For all other nations there was at most one gold medal in athletics at these games.

Four athletes won at least two gold medals in athletics at these games:

In addition, other services deserve special mention:

Scoring was based on the points table from 1964, which had also been used in the previous Olympic Games . In order to better classify the performance, in addition to the official points according to the 1964 rating table, the converted points according to the rating system valid from 1985 onwards are given; after that, only the seventh and eighth would switch places.

As in the last Olympic Games, the points table of 1971 was used for evaluation . For a better classification of the performance, the official points according to the table of 1971 and the points converted according to today's heptathlon system from 1980 are also given. According to this table, there would have been only one change in the order of the first eight, despite the extremely tight gaps: positions seven and eight should have been swapped. These comparisons are of course only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
