Individual churches appear in two sub-lists.
Churches called Dom
With very few exceptions, the cathedrals in Germany were originally built as Catholic churches in the pre-Reformation period . In principle, the following reasons, some of which are denominationally different, lead to a church building being called a "cathedral":
-
Catholic cathedral churches:
- It is an existing or former Catholic bishop's church (e.g. Cologne Cathedral, Worms Cathedral).
- It is another representative city or collegiate church with prominent importance, but which was never a bishopric (e.g. Xanten Cathedral, Frankfurt Cathedral).
-
Evangelical cathedral churches:
- It is an originally Catholic bishop's church, which became Protestant with the Reformation (e.g. Magdeburg Cathedral). In some Protestant churches the preaching churches of the (regional) bishops are still called cathedrals today.
- It is a main Protestant church built after the Reformation. (e.g. Berlin Cathedral)
- Popular cathedral churches: Regardless of the denomination, some ordinary parish churches, mostly in the countryside, are called "cathedral" due to their size and / or representative architecture . This title is usually associated with a regional designation, such as Köllertaldom or Eifeldom, and has no outstanding canonical meaning.
