The climax of the badminton year 1949 were the All England , Denmark Open , Irish Open , Scottish Open and French Open . For the first time the Thomas Cup , which Malaya was able to win, was held. In Belgium, Burma and the Philippines, national title fights were held for the first time.

The motorcycle world championship , first announced by the FIM , was held between June 12th and September 4th .
500 cc class
- 37-year-old AJS factory driver Leslie Graham from Great Britain is world champion in the 500 cm³ class . The two Italian Gilera factory pilots Nello Pagani and Arciso Artesiani follow in second and third place . In the constructors' championship, AJS prevails against Gilera and Norton .
350 cm³ class
- In the 350 cm³ class, 40-year-old Brit Freddie Frith wins the title on a Velocette . Irish Reg Armstrong on AJS finished second, Frith's fellow countryman and team-mate Bob Foster third . In the constructors' championship, Velocette wins ahead of AJS and Norton .
250 cc class
- The 28-year-old Italian Bruno Ruffo won the title in the 250 cm³ class on a Moto Guzzi ahead of his compatriot Dario Ambrosini ( Benelli ) and the Briton Ronald Mead ( Norton ). In the constructors' championship, Moto Guzzi prevailed ahead of Benelli and Rudge .
125 cc class
- 37-year-old FB Mondial factory driver Nello Pagani is world champion in the 125 cm³ class . His compatriots Renato Magi and Umberto Masetti (both Morini ) follow in second and third place . In the constructors' championship, FB-Mondial prevailed against Morini and MV Agusta .

- The British duo Eric Oliver / Denis Jenkinson on Norton is world champion in the sidecar . The Italians Ercole Frigerio / Lorenzo Dobelli on Gilera follow in second place, Frans Vanderschrick (Belgium) with co-driver Martin Whitney (Great Britain) on Norton is third . Norton wins the constructors' championship ahead of Gilera and BMW .
