The climax of the badminton year 1949 were the All England , Denmark Open , Irish Open , Scottish Open and French Open . For the first time the Thomas Cup , which Malaya was able to win, was held. In Belgium, Burma and the Philippines, national title fights were held for the first time.

The motorcycle world championship , first announced by the FIM , was held between June 12th and September 4th .

  • 37-year-old AJS factory driver Leslie Graham from Great Britain is world champion in the 500 cm³ class . The two Italian Gilera factory pilots Nello Pagani and Arciso Artesiani follow in second and third place . In the constructors' championship, AJS prevails against Gilera and Norton .
