At the XXXI. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , 13 boxing competitions were held, three for women and ten for men. The venue was the Riocentro exhibition center in the Barra da Tijuca district .

The AIBA decided at its meeting on 23 March 2013 New qualification criteria for the Olympic Games. She integrated the semi-professional World Series of Boxing and the association's own professional division APB into the Olympic qualification. This was the first time that professionals took part in the boxing competitions at the Olympic Games . At the same time, for the first time since 1984, fighting without head protection took place again. The ten-must system for determining winners, known from the professional sector, was also introduced.

Scandals and decisions

Irish middleweight Michael O'Reilly was the first athlete to test positive for doping at the Olympic Games and was subsequently excluded from the Games. The Turkish Adem Kılıççı qualified for Rio had already been disqualified from the games before leaving for the games because of a doping offense from 2012, and Önder Şipal was nominated for him in the middleweight division .

The day before his first fight, the Moroccan light heavyweight Hassan Saada was arrested and imprisoned for allegedly molesting two Brazilian maids in the Olympic village. He was therefore unable to play his duel against Mehmet Nadir Ünal and was eliminated from the games without a fight. He was released six days later. The Namibian boxer and flag bearer Jonas Junias Jonas was also arrested for the sexual harassment of a Brazilian woman in the Olympic Village . However, this was released before his first fight, which he lost to the French Hassan Amzile .

The Italian Vincenzo Mangiacapre , who was unable to compete in his last 16 match against Gabriel Maestre due to a fracture of the cheekbone in the preliminary round against Juan Pablo Romero , was also unable to play . The Mexican Raúl Curiel had previously been refused entry for health reasons before his first fight.

In the heavyweight final between the Russian Yevgeny Tishchenko and the Kazakhs Vasily Levit there was a 3-0 victory for the Russian, although Levit had clearly dominated the fight from the point of view of the sports reporters and spectators present. Sports presenter Sigi Bergmann spoke of an Olympic scandal. Tischtschenko's corner of the ring even congratulated Lewit on the alleged victory before the results were announced. The subsequent award ceremony was overshadowed by loud whistles from the audience. The quarter-final fight between the Russian Vladimir Nikitin and the Irishman Michael Conlan had another controversial outcome when the badly drawn Nikitin was declared the 3-0 winner. Because of these two decisions, six judges were suspended , according to the BBC .
