The Taylor County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Abilene .

geography

The county is located approximately 100 km northwest of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2381 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Jones County , Callahan County , Coleman County , Runnels County, and Nolan County .

history

Taylor County was formed in 1858 from parts of Bexar County and Travis County. It was named after the three brothers Edward Taylor , George Taylor and James Taylor , who were killed while defending the Alamo in 1836 .

As of the 2000 census , Taylor County had 126,555 people in 47,274 households and 32,524 families. The population density was 53 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.61 percent white, 6.73 percent African American, 0.58 percent Native American, 1.25 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 8.35 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 17.64 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,035 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,859. Males had a median income of $ 28,964 versus $ 21,021 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,176. 10.4 percent of families and 14.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
