The Moore County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Dumas .

The county is located in northwest Texas, in the Texas Panhandle , about 40 km to the north from Oklahoma and about 50 km to the west from New Mexico . It has an area of ​​2356 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Sherman County , Hutchinson County , Potter County, and Hartley Counties .

history

Moore County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on July 6, 1892. It was named after Edwin Ward Moore (1810-1865), who left the United States Navy as a lieutenant to serve in 1839 as commander of the Navy of the Republic of Texas . In this capacity he had the coast of Mexico attacked and blocked during the Texas Revolution

As of the 2000 census , Moore County had 20,121 people in 6,774 households and 5,331 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer.
