chess

The 1942 chess tournament in Munich took place from September 14th to 26th. The reigning world chess champion Alexander Alekhine won ahead of Paul Keres . The organizer, the European Chess Federation initiated by the Greater German Chess Federation, called the tournament the "European Championship" . The tournament is therefore regarded as the forerunner of today's European championships in chess , although Jewish players and players from countries that were at war with the German Reich were not able to participate.
