The Hardin County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Kountze .

The county is located in east Texas, about 40 km from Louisiana and has an area of ​​2324 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Tyler County , Jasper County , Orange County , Jefferson County , Liberty County, and Polk Counties .

history

Hardin County was formed in 1858 from parts of Jefferson County and Liberty County. It was named after a respected family named Hardin in Liberty County.

Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 4, 2019), the Ada Belle Oil Well and the Kirby-Hill House .

According to the 2000 census , Hardin County had 48,073 people in 17,805 households and 13,638 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.86 percent white, 6.91 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.74 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.54 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 17,805 households, 37.2 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 62.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers and 23.4 percent were non-families. 20.7 percent were single households and 9.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.09 people.

27.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24, 28.3 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,612 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,890. Males had a median income of $ 35,881 versus $ 22,823 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,962. 8.8 percent of families and 11.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
