Tennis Borussia Berlin (in the meantime "Berlin Tennis Club Borussia", since then short TeBe or TB Berlin ) is a Berlin sports club founded on April 9, 1902 as the Berlin tennis and ping-pong society Borussia .

Although the club was originally founded as a tennis and table tennis club, football was discovered as early as 1903 and a license was purchased for 50 pfennigs that allowed participation in the Berlin championship. Since table tennis was not particularly popular with new club members, it was removed from the program in the same year. Later a table tennis department was founded again, which (next to Hertha BSC ) is the most successful in Berlin.

history

Tennis was initially played on the former Bötzowfeld in what is now Friedrichshain . The number of members was initially only 20. Nevertheless, there were sporting successes: The first tournament was won against VfB Pankow . When a new housing estate was to be built on the Bötzowfeld, the association had to look for a new site a year after it was founded. With table tennis one tried to bridge the time. But “the members who had just been recruited resigned.” Finally, it was possible to continue playing tennis in the Castle Park in Niederschönhausen until around 1945.

After the club had played no special role in Berlin football for the first two decades of its existence, Tennis Borussia developed into one of the leading football teams in Berlin in the mid-1920s. The successful era ended abruptly when the Nazis who seized power . In order to forestall a forced exit, the Jewish association members, who made up about a third of the association, left TeBe.

Originally the club played on the parade ground in Prenzlauer Berg, later used places in Niederschönhausen and Wilmersdorf, before going to the police stadium in Mitte , where the stadium of the world youth was built in the GDR era. However, in the interwar period, games with a large audience were played in the Poststadion (more often) and in the Mommsenstadion (less often).

After the end of the Second World War , the club was re-launched in 1945 as SG Charlottenburg (long: Sports Group Charlottenburg). But it was not until 1967 before tennis could be reactivated. For this purpose, a new club called "Tennis Club TeBe" was founded.

After the club had played no special role in Berlin football in the first two decades of its existence, Tennis Borussia developed into one of the leading football teams in Berlin in the mid-1920s. The later first Reich coach Otto Nerz , who coached the team from 1924 to 1926, played a not insignificant role in the successes in football . Like his predecessor at TeBe, Richard Girulatis , Nerz was a lecturer at the German University for Physical Education. After the end of the first season under mink, the team occupied second place in season B of the major league. Another later coach of the national team, Sepp Herberger , played for the "Veilchen" from 1926 to 1930. In 1928, the team under coach Walter Hollstein set a German first division record by giving up only one point in 18 games and a goal difference of 93:16 by April 1928, and thus reached the final of the league championship for the first time, but failed Hertha, who was overpowering in those years. This constellation - relay champions, but then defeated in the Hertha finals - was repeated four times in a row between 1928 and 1931. It was not until 1932, when the opponent was not Hertha but Minerva 93 Berlin , that TeBe was able to win the coveted title of Berlin soccer champions for the first time . In the final round of the German championship, Tennis Borussia always had no chance in these years and was eliminated in the quarter-finals at the latest.

After the onset of the Nazi era, it took the club several years to regain sporting success. Only in 1941 did this succeed with winning the second title as champion of the Gauliga Berlin-Brandenburg , as the top division was now called. In the final round of the German championship, however, TeBe failed early, just like ten years earlier.

The first regular game operation for men's teams after the end of the war started in January 1946 in the form of the Berlin City League, in which a total of 36 teams competed in 4 seasons (TeBe and SG Charlottenburg in season C). Tennis Borussia had to run under the name SG Charlottenburg in this first post-war season (which was to remain so until the end of the 1947/48 season). In 1947 the club won the Berlin city championship in the new city ​​league , which in 1950 - based on the newly introduced contract player statutes - was renamed the "contract league ". For the 1948/49 season, the club countered again using its pre-war name and from then on played under the name of the Berlin tennis club Borussia . In the post-war period, TeBe was the most successful club in Berlin until the end of the 1950s: The first title win in 1947 was followed by four further championships (1950, 1951, 1952 and 1958). However, it was not possible to get past the 1st round in the final round of the German championship in 1949/50 , 1950/51 , 1951/52 or 1957/58 , in total TeBe only won 3 of a total of 16 games in these 4 final round participations . On the other hand, on the 50th anniversary of the club, the third Berlin championship title in a row was won in 1952 and the long-term rival Hertha BSC was only able to show a better ranking than TeBe in the 1950s in 1956/57. The then club boss Carl Helfert was able to state in the foreword to the 50-year-chronicle in 1952: “Tennis-Borussia is in good shape.” Looking back, two runner-up championships and four third places in the championships up to 1963 confirm this, but it can also be confirmed found that TeBe had already lost its role as the first violin of West Berlin football before the introduction of the Bundesliga. From the end of the 50s, Hertha and Tasmania gradually overtook the purple-whites as No. 1. With the construction of the Wall in 1961, the number of spectators also decreased by about a third, so that from an economic point of view, TeBe was not ready for the Bundesliga at the beginning of the 1960s and, with wise foresight, did not apply for a place in the German elite league starting in the 1963/64 season. A former player described the situation in March 1963 as follows: “Looking back, we can say that we missed our great opportunity because of the misery of recent years, because with only a reasonably secure footing in terms of finances and a little more sporting strength , there would have been no worries for the Bundesliga committee when selecting the Berlin club! But all that remains for us is the certainty that our decision not to run for office was the right one and that we are on the right track. "

When the Bundesliga was introduced in 1963 , the two leading Berlin clubs were now called Hertha BSC and Tasmania 1900 - Tennis Borussia found itself in the second-class regional league . In contrast to other Berlin teams, however, the club was able to prevent disappearing completely into oblivion and from time to time sporting successes could be celebrated. In the Bundesliga seasons 1974/75 and 1976/77 TeBe was even in the upper house of football, but was relegated back to the 2nd Bundesliga after one season. When, after the 1980/81 season, the two second national leagues were combined into a single-track division, TeBe had to move into the third division due to the poor placements of the last three years and continued to play, with the exception of one season in the single-track second division (1985 / 86), in the Oberliga Berlin .

Between 1993 and 2000, the club experienced a brief period of prosperity: TeBe played in the single-track 2nd Bundesliga in 1993/94 and 1998 to 2000. In the DFB-Pokal in 1993/94 they made it to the semi-finals, in which they lost 2-0 to Rot-Weiss Essen ; and in 1998/99 u. a. Hertha BSC were beaten 4-2 in front of 40,000 spectators in the Berlin Olympic Stadium . After financial inconsistencies about the main sponsor Göttinger Gruppe , who wanted to turn Tennis Borussia into a stock corporation, TeBe 2000 no longer received a license for professional football. 2001 ended the regional league season as bottom of the table, Tennis Borussia rose to the Oberliga Nordost , Staffel Nord and was thus fourth-rate for the first time in the club's history.

With the introduction of the 3rd league in 2008, TeBe played fifth-rate for the first time in the club's history, but the 2008/09 season was decidedly first in the table and thus managed to return to the fourth-rate Regionalliga Nord.

However, after only one year, they immediately dropped out as 15th. On May 21, 2010, the association submitted an application to the district court in Charlottenburg to initiate insolvency proceedings , which were successfully concluded. In December 2012, the continuation resolution was passed at a general meeting in accordance with §42 BGB. After a weak 2010/11 season (14th place in the table), the Borussia fell into the sixth division for the first time after they had failed in the relegation relegation on the third from bottom of the southern season, SC Borea Dresden with 0: 1 and 1: 2 a from.

So they started in the Berlin League since the 2011/12 season. On the penultimate match day of the 2014/15 season, Tennis Borussia secured the championship early with a 3-0 win over FC Internationale. The club has been playing in the Oberliga Nordost since the 2015/16 season . For the 2017/18 season, the club set the goal of advancing to the regional league. When the team under Cemal Yildiz had only won one of the first three games of the season, Yildiz was given leave of absence on September 4, 2017 and a day later the former national player Thomas Brdarić was introduced as the new coach. Despite the success with reaching 2nd place in the league, the club announced the separation from Thomas Brdarić before the end of the season. Reasons for this were initially not given by the official side, but Brdarić said in the interview that there were differences in the opinion about the further path of the club. For the new 2018/19 season , the previous U19 coach Dennis Kutrieb was signed. After the 2019/20 season was canceled due to the corona pandemic by the NOFV on June 5, 2020, the club will be promoted to the regional league for the new season . Markus Zschiesche will take over as coach for the new season after Dennis Kutrieb did not want to extend his expiring contract in May.

The women's division of Tennis Borussia was founded in 1969 and is one of the oldest women's football divisions in Germany. Between 1991 and 1997 the women's team played in the northern relay of the then double-track women's Bundesliga . In 2002 they were promoted to the now single-track women's Bundesliga for the first time, from which they were immediately relegated. Since the 2004/05 season, the so-called "Veilchenladies" have played in the 2nd Bundesliga North, which was newly created in 2004 between the national and regional leagues . In the 2008/09 season he was promoted back to the women's Bundesliga. However, the team rose again from bottom of the table. For the 2012/13 season, the club could no longer report a women's team. The currently most successful teams in sport are provided by the youth department: From 2003/04 to 2007/08 , Borussia's A-Juniors played tennis in the U-19 Bundesliga (North / Northeast relay), the top German division, which they played in after their promotion to belonged again to the 2009/10 season. After relegation this season, the U-19s have played their games in the Regionalliga (North / Northeast), the second highest A-Junior class. Hans Rosenthal team

The Hans-Rosenthal-Team (HRT) was founded in 1950 by, among others, the football-loving entertainer Hans Rosenthal as a celebrity team and served some greats from the show business to make their free time sporty. The HRT later joined the Tennis Borussia club, where Hans Rosenthal held the office of president for a while. In 1987 Rosenthal died and the eleven took his name. Stadion

Home of the club, which was the first Berlin football club to address the whole of Berlin and was not arrested in the neighborhood, has been the municipal Mommsen Stadium since the end of the Second World War , which has a capacity of 12,795. The background to this geographical shift of focus is that TeBe was re-founded after the Second World War from the SG Charlottenburg, in which the majority of the active members of the elite club had come together. The first men's and women's teams as well as the B-youth play there. The stadium has modern floodlights and an electronic scoreboard.

The youth games are played in the neighboring sports facilities "Kühler Weg" and "Hans Rosenthal". The second women's team and the female offspring play and train on the Julius Hirsch sports facility, which is also nearby (previously: Eichkamp sports facility).

In March 2008 TeBe announced plans according to which the association would like to renovate and convert the Poststadion in Moabit. The new stadium would integrate the listed parts of the Post Stadium into the new building and could have a capacity of up to 16,000 spectators.

Table tennis

The table tennis division of Tennis Borussia was re-established in 1945 on the initiative of Herbert Hausmann. For decades it has been the most successful men's team in Berlin (alongside Hertha BSC ). Since the Oberliga Nord was founded in the early 1950s, the violets played in what was then the highest German class. When the table tennis Bundesliga was founded in 1966 , TeBe finished second in the Oberliga behind VfL Osnabrück and was thus allowed to participate in the Bundesliga qualification. However, it was only enough for third and last place behind the Post SV Augsburg and the TTV Metelen , so that the promotion was missed. A year later, however, the leap into the German elite league succeeded. However, Berliners could not stay there and had to relegate again in 1968. In the two following years TeBe was again champion of the Oberliga and took part in the promotion round, in which they failed both times as third (1969 at TGS Rödelheim and Mettmanner TV , 1970 at Meidericher TTC and SV Weißblau-Allianz München ). After the runner-up in the north was reached twice in 1974 (behind VfL Osnabrück) and 1976 (behind Hertha BSC), a gradual downward trend began, which in 1980 led to relegation from the second-highest division, now known as the Regionalliga Nord . It was not until the beginning of the 1990s that there were major successes at Tennis Borussia. In the 2005/06 season they finally managed to win the championship in the Regionalliga Nord and have since played in the Second Bundesliga North. In 2008, despite reaching second place, they waived promotion to the first division.

Well-known players were Manfred Konieczka , Dieter Köhler , Günter Felske , Wolfgang Prandke , Michael Heene, Klaus Goerdel, Friedrich-Karl Brauns and Sascha Köstner . The senior team, which is also successful, managed to achieve the title of German team champion several times.

Other sports

The club has had a boxing department since 1925 . One of its members was Erich Seelig .

In 1928 a team from the rugby department of SC Charlottenburg moved to TeBe. Under the direction of Jacques Karp, the team won the Berlin championship five times (1931-1934, 1936). In the same year, most of the players went to BSV 1892 to set up their own rugby team.

The cheerleading department, founded in 1991, was filled with life by the formation "Spirit Fairies". However, this closed the club on June 30, 2007 and joined the company sports department of the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district office.

Futsal has also been played at TeBe since 2008 . The two teams compete in the association league and in the district league.
