Olympic Summer Games 2012 / volleyball (hall) / participants

In the volleyball tournament of the 2012 Olympic Games , twelve teams each competed for men and women. A squad with twelve players was nominated for each team. The roster was officially published by the FIVB on July 17th .

Men

Argentina

After missing the tournament in Beijing four years ago , the Argentine team qualified for London in the 2012 South American elimination. She achieved her best Olympic result so far in 1988 in Seoul when she won the bronze medal.

Australia first played host to Sydney in 2000 , finishing eighth. 2012 saw the third participation as the winner of the Asian qualification.

Brazil

The Brazilians were the only nation to take part in all Olympic tournaments. In 1996 in Atlanta and 2004 in Athens they won the gold medal. For London they qualified third in the 2011 World Cup.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria was represented at an Olympic tournament for the eighth time. The Bulgarians achieved their best result in 1980 in Moscow , when they lost to the hosts in the final. In 2012 they used the home advantage at the last qualifying tournament in Sofia .

Germany

For the fourth time Germany was represented at an Olympic tournament. The GDR selection came fourth in 1968 and second in Munich in 1972 , while the host took eleventh place. After finishing ninth in Beijing in 2008 , DVV also qualified for London with their home game in Berlin.

Italy

Italy has participated in every Olympic tournament since 1976. In 1996 in Atlanta and 2004 in Athens , the Italians won silver. In 2012 they prevailed against Germany in the final of the European qualification.

Russia

Russia (with its predecessor states) missed a single Olympic tournament due to the boycott in 1984 . The Soviets won gold in 1964, 1968 and 1980. As winners of the World Cup 2011, they qualified for the tournament in London.

Tunisia qualified as the African representative for the sixth time for the Olympic Games. The North Africans achieved their best result so far with ninth place in 1984 in Los Angeles .

The US team , which qualified in the NORCECA elimination in 2012, was represented at the first two Olympic tournaments and has always been there since their home game in 1984 in Los Angeles . Since the Americans won their third gold medal after 1984 and 1988 in Beijing in 2008 , they competed as defending champions in London.
