I borghi più belli d'Italia ( German The Most Beautiful Places in Italy ) is a private association that promotes the small, mostly medieval centers of Italy , sometimes also individual districts , fractions and castles with "outstanding historical and artistic interest". These centers are mostly outside the normal tourist routes, and despite their cultural tourism value, they risk being forgotten and are consequently subject to depopulation, decay and neglect.
The association was founded in March 2001 on the initiative of the Associazione Nazionale Comuni Italiani (ANCI), a non-profit association that was founded in 1901 and consists of 7,318 Italian municipalities (as of June 2013). The ANCI fulfills various functions, such as B. the representation of interests of its members vis-à-vis the central organs of the state (parliament, government, regions).
The model was the French association Les plus beaux villages de France , which was founded in 1982. Due to the "European proximity", the French , Walloon and Italian associations laid the foundation stone in 2003 for cooperation in creating the association Les plus beaux villages de la Terre in Collonges-la-Rouge , a federation that combines the existing associations of the " most beautiful places ”united. In 2012, the associations of Québec and Japan joined the international association.
There were just over 200 places in Italy in 2012, 258 in 2016 and 291 in 2018 with the I borghi più belli d'Italia label . Most of these are places that were created in the Middle Ages and where driving is largely prohibited (with the exception of local residents) . Other places are car-free because the streets are too narrow.
