The El Paso County is a county in the US state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in El Paso .

geography

The county is located on the westernmost point of Texas and borders in the north to New Mexico and the southwest of Mexico . The border with Mexico forms from El Paso the Rio Grande , which rises in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and flows through New Mexico. It has an area of ​​2628 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered to the east by Hudspeth County and to the north (New Mexico) by Doña Ana County and Otero County .

history

El Paso County was formed on January 3, 1850 from parts of Santa Fe County . The administrative organization was completed in March 1871. It was named after the passage of the Rio Grande through the surrounding mountains, ie El Paso del Norte (German: "North Pass") or El Paso del Rio del Norte (German: "North River Pass").

As of the 2000 census , El Paso County had 679,622 people; 210,022 households and 166,127 families were counted. The population density was 259 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.95 percent white, 3.06 percent African American, 0.82 percent Native American, 0.98 percent Asian, 0.10 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 17.91 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.19 percent were descended from two or more races. 78.23 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 years or over there were 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,051 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,410. Males had a median income of $ 26,882 versus $ 20,722 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,421. 20.5 percent of families and 23.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
