The Henderson County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Athens .

The county is northeast of the geographic center of Texas, approximately 120 km from Louisiana , Arkansas, and Oklahoma . It has an area of ​​2458 square kilometers, of which 194 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Kaufman County , Smith County , Cherokee County , Anderson County , Navarro County, and Ellis County .

history

Henderson County was formed on April 26, 1846 from parts of Houston County and Nacogdoches County . The administrative organization was completed on July 13 of the same year. It was named after James Pinckney Henderson , the first governor of the state of Texas . Prior to that, Henderson held a number of important positions in the Republic of Texas such as Attorney General and Ambassador to Washington, DC After serving as Governor, he rose to Major General in the United States Army and fought in the Battle of Monterrey . He was a senator from 1857 to 1858 .

One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of October 25, 2019, the Faulk and Gauntt Building .

According to the 2000 census , Henderson County's population was 73,277 people in 28,804 households and 20,969 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,533 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,255. Males had a median income of $ 31,847 versus $ 21,650 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,772. 11.7 percent of families and 15.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
