Municípios in Portugal within the parent districts

The list of Municípios in Portugal (also Munizipien) names the 308 bodies ( Autarquia ) of the second level of local self-government in Portugal that have existed since 2004. The municipalities ( freguesias ) located in the concelho , by which the association of municipalities is meant, belong to the município . The Município is the main administrative unit in the country. The division into municípios has a long tradition in Portugal over the course of its eight hundred year history .

The Município is administered by the Câmara Municipal (which corresponds to the German town hall or the municipal administration). The Câmara is headed by a council made up of the President of the Câmara and the Vereadores , full-time temporary officials. The members will be just like the Assembleia Municipal elected as a municipal parliament, as far as the Assembleia Municipal not as automatic members , the President of the Juntas the Freguesias belong anyway - in order to lower the voice number as the elected members. President of the Câmara becomes the first candidate on the list with the most votes. The council of the Câmara Municipal has - depending on the size of the population of the Municípios - between 5 and 17 members. The Council is the executive body responsible for administering the Município, inter alia in accordance with the decisions made by the Assembleia Municipal.

The municípios and freguesias have their own flags. The appearance of the flag is basically dependent on the size of the population. There are three orders of magnitude:

Cidade: a city with at least ten thousand inhabitants
Vila: a small town with a few thousand inhabitants
Aldeia: a village with up to a few hundred inhabitants

The town's coat of arms is usually located in the center of each flag, but it can also be omitted for simplicity. A silver brick crown with three (Aldeia), four (Vila) or five (Cidade) towers is also placed on the coat of arms. Lisbon as the capital wears a golden crown. Below the coat of arms there is also a banner with the name of the administrative unit. According to the municipal flag law, Cidades have eight- fold flags , Vilas have quartered flags, and Aldeias have one -colored flags. In addition, the law states that according to the heraldic rules, color can only follow metal (silver or gold), and metal can only follow color. However, there are always deviations from the specifications.
