The Highfield Festival is an annual music festival . From 1998 to 2009 it took place at the Hohenfelden reservoir (south of Erfurt ). It has been taking place at Lake Störmthaler near Großpösna in the Leipzig district since 2010 . The name is derived from the place name Hohenfelden (English high field ).

In recent years the festival has established itself as the most important indie rock festival in the new federal states. Since it was first held, the number of visitors has risen continuously from 10,000 to almost 25,000 in 2006. The organizers are FKP Scorpio , who host many major festivals in German-speaking countries, as well as Semmel Concerts, which are particularly active in Bavaria , Berlin and East Germany . In 2008 the festival was sold out for the first time with 25,000 visitors.

In September 2008 it was announced that the festival will no longer take place at the reservoir from 2010 because of problems with the pollution of the fields used for camping and parking as well as disruptions to the normal operation of the reservoir area.

The Area4 Festival in West Germany was established as a “sister festival ” in 2005–2012 , and was held for the last time in 2012 (in Lüdinghausen ). A large proportion of the music groups that performed at the Highfield Festival also played at the Area4 Festival, which traditionally took place over the same weekend. In 2016, the capacity was increased to 35,000 participants, for which the parking and campground areas at Störmthaler See were enlarged accordingly. Despite the increased capacity, the festival was sold out.

In 2020, the festival was canceled for the first time due to an official order. The background to this was the measures to contain the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany and the associated ban on major events until August 31, 2020 in accordance with the package of measures of April 15, 2020.
