List of cavalry regiments of the Old Prussian Army

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cavalry regiments were the largest organizational units of the old Prussian mounted troops. From 1644 to 1806, 35 cavalry regiments gradually emerged. These regiments were also differentiated according to different types of troops: 1. Cuirassier regiments, 2. Dragoon regiments, 3. Hussar regiments. At first only cuirassiers were considered cavalry , then the dragoons (mounted infantry) and only in the late 18th century the hussars . The size of the regiments differed between the types of troops. In the course of time, the size of regiments within a cavalry type also changed. At the time of Frederick the Great, cuirassier and dragoon regiments usually consisted of five squadrons , and hussar regiments of ten squadrons.

Systematics

The Prussian regiments were numbered shortly before the army collapsed in 1806. Before that, the regiments were named exclusively after their owners. The Prussian army reformer Prince Leopold I von Anhalt-Dessau , with his "Specifications" in 1729/1737, introduced the first master list , which was structured according to the principle of anciency. In the case of identical names, an "old" or "young" was added depending on the age. Some regiments had general names, such as "Gens d'armes" (K 10). To distinguish the New Prussian regiments , the designation "K / H" used by Hans Bleckwenn is shown here with an Arabic number (New Prussian "No.") and "D" with a Roman number. In addition, the year of foundation has been added to the list below. This is intended to facilitate comparability. This numbering consistently follows the Ticino line-ups .
