history
In the High Middle Ages , the community managed itself autonomously. In return, the church was placed under the sovereignty of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre , which then raised the tithe . The place is first mentioned in 1101 as Avedele , when, according to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn, the church passed into the possession of the Canon of Lescar . In 1412 Bédeille finally came under the feudal lordship of the Viscount of Béarn. In the 16th century Gabriel de Gerderest, Knight of the Ordre de Saint-Michel , took over this role, which he later sold to the lord of Idron , who represented the Catholic side during the Reformation of Béarn. He died in Navarrenx in 1569 during the Huguenot Wars , without leaving a successor. The future King Henry IV handed over the confiscated area to Heinrich d'Albret (born around 1540, died 1598), a branch of the Albrets. who already had numerous titles and was the first to call himself “Sovereign of Bédeille”. From then on, Bédeille retained his feudal independence until the French Revolution .
Other toponyms from Bédeille are Bedelhe ( census , 1402), Vedelha and Avedelha (census in the Bigorre ), Abedeille (Reformation of Béarn, 1682). On the map of Cassini 1750, the municipality is entered as Bedeille with the addition of “Sovereignty”, listed as Bedeille during the French Revolution in 1793, and eight years later as Bedeille and Bédeille during the French Consulate .
Population development
After peaking at over 354 residents in the mid-19th century, the number had declined by more than half by the 1970s. This trend has subsequently reversed and since the 1980s the number has remained stable at around 200 inhabitants.
