This list contains the municipalities with double names in Germany , sorted by federal state (as of August 2019) . Double names are usually created through a church merger .

Municipalities that are spelled with a hyphen , however, do not have a double name (e.g. Neu-Ulm for the new Ulm or Wolframs-Eschenbach for the Eschenbach of Wolfram ) are expressly not listed . Municipalities with additions to their names (e.g. Bächingen an der Brenz ) or place names in several words (e.g. Schwäbisch Gmünd ) are also not listed.

The largest German community with a double name is Villingen-Schwenningen (85,181 inh.) In Baden-Württemberg, the smallest Waldhof-Falkenstein (21 inh.) In Rhineland-Palatinate. The only municipality with a name consisting of two identical words is Baden-Baden in Baden-Württemberg.

Hellschen-Heringsand-Unterschaar and Rehm-Flehde-Bargen (both located in Schleswig-Holstein) are the only municipalities in Germany to have a triple name . They are also included in the following list. Hellschen-Heringsand-Unterschaar also has the longest name of all municipalities in Germany.

Baden-Württemberg

In Baden-Württemberg there are 42 communities with double names, including nine cities. 3.815% of the municipalities in Baden-Württemberg therefore have a double name. Bavaria
