history

Labatut was first mentioned in the 14th century when troops from Jean II, known as "the fat" or "the hunchback", Count of Armagnac , Fézensac and Rodez , attacked the village in 1382 . The consequences were seen in the Béarn census three years later, when only 13 households were counted. Labatut was part of the Montaner Bailliage .

At the end of the 15th century, the Navailles family acquired the manorial rule , which they would keep until the French Revolution . A century later, François de Navailles-Labatut married Marguerite d'Albret, a daughter of John III. , King of Navarre , also known as Jean d'Albret . According to a local story, François de Navailles-Labatut, a soldier by trade, was imprisoned and left his pregnant wife alone. After receiving the news from her husband, Marguerite passed out. She was taken to a chapel where she woke up when thieves tried to steal her ring. A few days later she gave birth to her first child.

The complaints book of the French Revolution reveals that many residents of the parish were engaged in craft activities at the time, such as B. the processing of flax , the collecting of pebbles or the clog-making .

Toponyms and mentions of Labatut were:

Attractions

  • Parish church, dedicated to Martin von Tours , probably rebuilt in the 17th century. Around 1714 the bell tower was built or changed and the north aisle was probably added, as evidenced by the corresponding year above the entrance. The south aisle was added along with repair work in the 17th century. The bell tower rests on a tower with a larger floor plan, which forms the entrance porch. The slate- covered roofs of the entrance porch and bell tower curve outwards at the lower edges and show a certain development in eighteenth-century church construction in the region. The design is also called à l'impériale ( German  imperial ) because its curved and tapering shape is reminiscent of an imperial crown . Many of the church's furnishings date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Navailles Castle. The original castle was mentioned in 1385 as l'ostau deu senhor de la Mote Domenger . When the Navailles family acquired the manor at the end of the 15th century, the existing simple castle appeared inadequate or shabby. Therefore, at the beginning of the 16th century, the family decided to build a new building on a step above the Louet valley like the previous castle. The building served the family as a noble residence until the French Revolution. The castle is marked as Labatut on the map of Cassini in 1750 . In the 19th century the castle was fundamentally rebuilt, so that few old elements are left today. An exception is the stair tower with twin windows , a witness of the Renaissance style in the Béarn.
