Olympic Winter Games 2018 / Ice Hockey (Men) / Squad

ice Hockey

The squad for the 2018 men's Olympic ice hockey tournament , which was held from February 14 to 25, 2018 in Gangneung , South Korea , consisted of a total of 300 players in twelve teams. As a result, each team nominated a 25-man squad consisting of three goalkeepers , eight defenders and 14 attackers .

The squads were significantly influenced by the decision of the National Hockey League (NHL) not to interrupt their 2017/18 season for the Olympics for the first time since the 1994 Winter Games . The main reason given by the NHL was the cost of travel, accommodation and insurance for its players in South Korea, which, unlike in 2014, should no longer be covered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In addition, possible injuries to the players, which could influence the sporting outcome of the season, as well as the lack of marketing rights in image and sound of the NHL at the Olympic Games were cited as further reasons. In a statement, the IOC announced that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) had agreed to assume the costs mentioned and thus create the same financial framework as in 2014. Furthermore, such reimbursement of costs is not customary in cases comparable to those of the National Basketball Association for the Summer Olympic Games. Although some players originally announced that they would ignore the NHL's decision and possible sanctions, in the end none of the 300 nominees is under contract with an NHL team. At the 2014 Winter Games, the NHL provided around half of all players, while this proportion was around 90% for the semi-finals.

In the following, the cadres of the teams are listed, sorted by group, as well as the respective coaching staff and other officials.

Olympic athletes from Russia

The Russian contingent, which was only allowed to start under a neutral flag as a result of the ban imposed for systematic doping, was announced on January 25, 2018. Head coach Oleg Snarok only considered players from the domestic Continental Hockey League (KHL), although only three KHL teams were represented. Beyond the 25-man squad, the defenders Nikita Trjamkin ( Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg ) and Yegor Jakowlew ( SKA Saint Petersburg ) as well as the attacker Vladimir Tkachev ( Ak Bars Kazan ) were already identified as potential successors and trained with the team. Yakovlev subsequently replaced the injured Dinar Chafisullin .

Germany

The final German squad was announced on January 23, 2018, with national coach Marco Sturm cutting five players from a provisional 30-man squad while all Olympic participants were active in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). Konrad Abeltshauser ( EHC Red Bull Munich ), Sinan Akdağ ( Adler Mannheim ), Justin Krueger ( SC Bern ), Stefan Loibl ( Straubing Tigers ) and Mathias Niederberger ( Düsseldorfer EG ) are on call . Akdağ was nominated for the injured Denis Reul a few days later .

Tobias Abstreiter , nominal assistant coach of the German selection, did not receive any approval for the Olympic Games from his club, the Düsseldorfer EG . As this became known after the nomination period for officials, Christian Künast took on this role, parallel to his function as a video analyst.
