The Logan was originally developed for the Indian market in a joint venture with Mahindra & Mahindra .

Since summer 2010, the model was only available in Germany as a station wagon ( Logan MCV ), delivery van ( Logan Express / VAN ) or pick-up ( Logan Pick-Up ).

Renault manager Gérard Detourbet has been responsible for the Logan project since 2003 .

The five-seater car was initially offered from September 2004 as a “5000 Euro car” in Africa , South America and Eastern European countries as the successor to the Dacia Solenza . In Germany it went on sale from mid-2005 with adapted safety equipment (two airbags and ABS ) from around 7200 euros. The Logan was thus one of the most affordable new cars in its class in Germany. In Austria it was offered from 7960 euros including sales tax .

In autumn 2006, a station wagon version ( Logan MCV ) with a load volume of 2,350 liters or a maximum of seven seats came onto the market. The model range in Eastern Europe was completed by a paneled van (Logan Express) and a pickup ( Logan Pick-Up ), which were also available in Germany from March 2009.

The Dacia Logan is produced by the Renault subsidiary Dacia in Romania . Since 2005 it has been rolling off the assembly line in Russia , Morocco and Colombia as Renault, the notchback since 2007 as the Nissan Aprio in Brazil , the pickup since 2008 as the Nissan NP200 pickup in South Africa . It is also produced in Iran (at Pars Khodro under the name Tondar 90 ), in India and in the People's Republic of China .

Renault focused on simplicity when developing the Dacia Logan. By dispensing with expensive equipment and using existing Renault technology, the vehicle could be offered at an unusually low price for the Western European market. With a trunk volume of 510 liters, four doors and simple equipment, the vehicle based on the newly released Clio with a moderate amount of space was particularly attractive for cost-conscious drivers.

In the summer of 2010, sales of the notchback sedan in Germany were discontinued due to ever lower demand.

Engines

The Logan was offered with three Renault petrol engines : 1.4 liters (55 kW / 75 PS), 1.6 liters (64 kW / 87 PS) and 1.6 liters 16V (77 kW / 105 PS). According to the manufacturer, they consume between 7.5 and 7.6 liters of super petrol per 100 km. Top speed: 155, 167, 174 km / h. In addition, a model with 1.5-liter was common rail - diesel engine from Renault offered the 10,100 € for counting itself in the upscale Lauréate equipment (in Austria 11 090 €) to the best diesel cars and 5.2 liters of diesel per 100 km consumed.

Motorsport and Studies

Dacia Logan Steppe Concept

Since 2006, the ADAC has organized a touring car racing series with the Dacia Logan - the ADAC Dacia Logan Cup. Logan models that are adapted to the regulations of motorsport are used, which are also permitted in road traffic.

On the of Michelin aligned Challenge Bibendum Renault presented in 2007, the "Logan Renault eco²" a fuel-efficient concept car, which according to the manufacturer just 2.72 liters of diesel per 100 km, and consumes 71 g CO 2 discharges per kilometer.

At the Geneva Motor Show 2006 a study Logan Steppe Concept with off-road optics was shown.

Facelift

In July 2008, a revised version of the Logan sedan came on the market. The model based on the Dacia Sandero only includes optical retouching, the technology remains unchanged. The front got larger headlights and a wider radiator grille with the new Dacia logo, which in the two more expensive versions has a chrome-plated trim strip. There is also a new bumper and a wider air inlet in the new front apron. The trunk lid was changed and a spoiler lip was added. The taillights and the bumper have also been modified. The highest equipment line also has a chrome strip at the rear.

The sedan also received the larger exterior mirrors from the MCV station wagon , which was also modified in March 2009. Overall, the length of the notchback model grew by about four centimeters to 4.29 meters. In the interior, the dashboard was taken from the Sandero, and a brake assistant complements the ABS as standard . The basic price of the basic Logan version remained unchanged at 7200 euros, but the higher-quality Ambiance and Lauréate equipment became 150 to 450 euros more expensive. The previously highest quality equipment line called Prestige was omitted.

At the end of 2012, at the same time as the introduction of the second generation of the Sandero, the new Logan was presented as a sedan. Even in the new generation, this is not imported into some Western European countries. In spring 2013, the new edition of the Logan MCV station wagon was presented, which no longer offers the possibility of accommodating a third row of seats.

The limousine is available in Spain and Portugal. The identical Renault Symbol is sold in some markets . The four-door is available with two 54 kW (73 hp) and 66 kW (90 hp) petrol engines and two diesel variants with 55 and 66 kW (90 hp).

For the 2017 model year, the Logan received a facelift. Since then, Dacia has offered the SCe 75, a three-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of around 1 liter and 55 kW / 75 hp.

technology

The Logan is based on the MO platform of the Renault Clio . At the front it has an axle construction with MacPherson struts and a transverse stabilizer , which is dampened by means of a subframe , and a torsion beam axle with trailing arms at the rear .

The Logan MCV has achieved three stars in the Euro NCAP crash test since 2014.

Success and criticism

There has been repeated criticism of the Logan's below-average security technology. In the Euro NCAP crash test, for example, it did significantly worse than its competitors, since the stress values on the head of the driver and front passenger (so-called HIC values) are higher than those of comparable more modern vehicles. A modified elk test of ADAC , in which the Logan flipped, turned out later to be erroneous out: When the subject vehicle, the tire had been damaged by previous tests. Side airbags are now also optionally available for the Dacia Logan. The second generation Dacia Logan has ESP and side airbags as standard .

The “cheap car” Logan - on the market since July 2005 - initially failed to meet Renault's expectations on the German market. By the end of October 2005, only 1,478 units were sold there. By October 2006 there were 6300 vehicles. In Austria, sales expectations were far exceeded in 2006, and there were even delivery bottlenecks. In Germany in 2008 the waiting time for a new Logan MCV was up to twelve weeks. In France, shortly after their market launch in 2005, used vehicles were occasionally traded more expensive than new vehicles due to high demand. With the introduction of the environmental bonus in Germany, the demand for new vehicles increased, at times there were delivery times of up to five months. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority , 23,764 vehicles were newly registered in Germany between January and August 2009.

The Logan achieves its low sales price in particular through low vehicle unit costs by using inexpensive components and materials and reducing the number of variants. Using the same exterior mirror for the left and right-hand side, for example, should bring about savings of around two euros per vehicle. In addition, the tool costs are reduced by the use of discs with a slight curvature, which thereby facilitate installation. In addition, through the use of computer simulations instead of prototypes, the development costs could be reduced to around 360 million euros. This represents roughly half of the usual investment in a new model.

In Western Europe, Renault generates an average return on sales of 15 percent with every model sold, despite the low sales price . In the automotive industry, only Porsche achieved such a high value with the 911 . Globally, the return on sales is still six percent.
