History / other
The federal highway 503 was realized in the course of the Olympic Games in 1972 as a feeder for the competition facilities in Kiel-Schilksee . Today it merges into the L 45 in the municipality of Schwedeneck , in Krusendorf this merges into the L 285 , which is connected to the federal highway 76 shortly before Eckernförde .
As part of the construction work, a second crossing of the Kiel Canal was built parallel to the Prince Heinrich Bridge , which was built as an iron lattice structure . The historic bridge then served as an oncoming lane until it was replaced by a new building in the early 1990s due to its dilapidation.
In the city of Kiel, the federal road led as the Westring to Eckernförder Straße , but in the course of the new construction of the B 76 the entire Westring was downgraded to the K10 district road, so that the B 503 ends today at the Holstein Stadium and joins the new B 76 there.
