List of Greek word stems in German foreign words
Greek word stems can be found in German mainly in technical terms that either come directly from Greek or are neoplasms . Numerous scientific terms and other foreign words in the Indo-European languages have been and are derived from a limited number of these word stems . They are helpful for understanding everyday and scientific foreign words and their etymology .
Such word stems are listed in the table. There are separate lists for prefixes, suffixes and numerals: Greek prefixes , Greek suffixes , Greek numerals .
About the spelling
Many of the foreign words were conveyed through Latin , which is why the spelling often comes from Latin transcriptions of Greek words. This is especially true for endings (Greek -ον > Latin -um ), diphthongs (Greek αι > Latin ae > German ä ) and the Greek letter Kappa (Greek κ > Latin c > German k or z ).
