The 85th presentation of the Oscars ( English 85th Academy Awards ) took place on February 24, 2013 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles . The members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) voted on the best American and foreign film productions (feature, short, documentary and animated films) and filmmakers of the previous year , which were honored at a live television gala. Ben Affleck's thriller Argo prevailed as the best feature film . The most award-winning film was Ang Lee's adventure film Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger (four awards).

The American film, television and theater producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron took on the production of the Academy Awards for the first time . Both had worked as executive producers on the 2003 Oscar-winning musical film Chicago . They hired the US American Don Mischer , who had already held this position at the two previous awards, to direct. Seth MacFarlane was hired for the moderation . The actor, producer and comedian, among other things creator of the popular cartoon series Family Guy , first took over the direction of a feature film in 2012. The comedy Ted became one of the most successful productions at the American box office.

In the run-up to the Oscars, the honor winners and the winners of the science and technology awards were honored at two separate events on December 1, 2012 (Annual Governors Awards) and February 9, 2013.

Favorites

Among other things, feature films that were longer than 40 minutes and were shown for a fee for at least seven consecutive days in a cinema in Los Angeles County between January 1 and December 31, 2012 could be nominated . In 2012, this applied to 282 film productions.

The Oscar nominations were officially announced on January 10, 2013 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills by presenter Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone , five days earlier than usual. This was intended to give the voters a longer period of time to view the nominated films. The Oscar nominations therefore took place for the first time before the presentation of the Golden Globe Awards , which took place on January 13, 2013.

Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln received the most frequent nominations in the run-up to it. It received twelve nominations but was only honored twice ( Best Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis , Best Production Design ). Day-Lewis was the first actor in the history of the Academy Awards to win a third award in the Best Actor category . Ben Affleck's thriller Argo prevailed as the best film of the year and won the awards for best adapted screenplay and best editing. The most awards were won by Ang Lee's drama Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger , which turned its eleven nominations into four victories (direction, camera, soundtrack, visual effects). A total of nine productions were considered in the Best Film category , including the Franco-German-Austrian co-production Liebe by Michael Haneke . The French-language drama about a Parisian music professor couple, whose love is put to the test after the woman has suffered a stroke, was also named in the categories of Best Foreign Language Film (Country of Submission: Austria), Best Director , Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress ( Emmanuelle Riva ) nominated, but only won the award for best foreign language film. At 85 years of age, the Frenchwoman Riva was the oldest actress ever to have been nominated for best leading actress. In the same category, the nine-year-old American Quvenzhané Wallis ( Beasts of the Southern Wild ) was the youngest actress ever nominated for a regular acting award. The award for the best leading actress went to the 22-year-old American Jennifer Lawrence ( Silver Linings ) , who became the second youngest winner to date in this category (in 1987, the then 21-year-old American Marlee Matlin won the Oscar for her Leading role in God's forgotten children ). The German-Austrian actor Christoph Waltz was again named Best Supporting Actor for his second collaboration with Quentin Tarantino on the Western Django Unchained . In the Best Sound Editing category , there was a tie between Zero Dark Thirty and James Bond 007: Skyfall . It was only the sixth time in history that such a stalemate occurred.

The German contribution Barbara by Christian Petzold and the film Lore by Cate Shortland , which was also directed in German and which was submitted by Australia, did not make the shortlist for best foreign language film . The competing for Switzerland Post Winter thief by Ursula Meier reached the second round of the nine best entries, but where this with The Deep (Iceland), Beyond the Hills (Romania) and Intouchables retired (France). A new record of submissions was achieved with a total of 71 foreign language films. The submission process was overshadowed by the low-budget film Innocence of Muslims, which was partially published on the Internet in summer 2012 . The film, classified as anti-Islamic , led to violent riots in the Islamic world with numerous deaths. The Iran , last year's winner of the prize with Asghar Farhadi's family drama Nader and Simin - A Separation , then pulled his chosen for 2013 film - Seyyed Reza Mir-Karimi's family drama Ye have Ghand (English-language title: A Cube of Sugar ) - back.

The film Cloud Atlas , co- directed by the German director Tom Tykwer, failed in the preselection of the Best Visual Effects category .

Innovations

AMPAS announced changes to the music categories in mid-August 2012. The number of nominees for the best movie song was increased from three to five. During the nomination process, all voting members of the music industry should receive a list of entries and a DVD copy of the music clips. The five music contributions with the most votes received Oscar nominations.

Voting on the Oscar nominations began on December 17, 2012 and ended on January 4, 2013, originally it was only planned to run until January 3. For the first time, AMPAS members were able to submit their votes electronically.

At the request of industry members, the award for the best production design (formerly the Art Direction Award ) was renamed the Production Design Award . In 2013, hair stylists will be honored for the first time in the category previously reserved for make-up artists.
