Complete medal table

The 10th World Athletics Championships (officially: 10th IAAF World Championships in Athletics Helsinki 2005 ) were held between August 6 and 14, 2005 in the Finnish capital Helsinki . The competitions took place in the modernized Olympic Stadium, which was the venue for the 1st World Athletics Championships in 1983 .

Applications for the venue

Originally the World Championships were supposed to take place in London . However, an expert opinion commissioned by the British government came to the conclusion that the necessary new construction of an athletics stadium was not profitable. The British Athletics Association therefore suggested that the World Championships be held in Sheffield . When the International Athletics Federation (IAAF) did not respond, the organization of the world championships was returned.

Berlin , Brussels , Budapest , Helsinki , Moscow and Rome all competed for the new tender . On April 14, 2002, the IAAF Council surprisingly decided in favor of the Finnish capital during its meeting in Nairobi .

overview

The highlights were three world records:

The young German thrower Christina Obergföll set a new European javelin record with 70.03 m.

The 3,000-meter obstacle course has now been added to the women's competition program . After many years of development, in which more and more women's disciplines had found their way into the competition catalog, the offer for women and men was largely aligned. Differences were and still are in the weights of the throwing devices and in the height of hurdles and obstacles. The 50 km walk was reserved for men alone .

The oldest participant was the 50-year-old Israeli marathon runner Haile Satayin (born April 11, 1955), who finished 21st with a personal best of 2:17:26 h. The youngest participant was the only 14-year-old 100-meter runner Rosa-Mystique Jones from Nauru (preliminary: eighth place in 13.16 s).

doping

Like the last two World Athletics Championships in Edmonton in 2001 and Paris in 2003 , these World Championships were also heavily characterized by the problem of doping due to subsequent investigations and findings. Eight athletes, including three world champions, were stripped of their placements, medals and titles due to violations of the doping regulations.

The nationalities of doping offenders had shifted compared to 2001 and 2003. At the last two World Championships, the overwhelming majority came from the USA . This year four athletes came from Belarus , three from Russia and one from Ukraine , only the throwing and pushing disciplines were affected.

Bonuses

Athletes who set a world record in the world championship competitions received a prize of US $ 100,000 from the organizing International Athletics Association IAAF. Further prizes were announced for all participants who came in the top eight in the final battle:
