The federal road 26n (abbreviation: B 26n ) is the name of a federal trunk road that is being planned. It is supposed to connect the Autobahn junction Schweinfurt / Werneck ( A 7 and A 70 ) with the A 3 near Helmstadt . The federal trunk road is not only of regional importance for the regional center of Würzburg , but has also been of national importance since German reunification .

As an alternative connection to the A 3, the extension of the Würzburg-West motorway triangle ( A 3 and A 81 ) is under discussion, where advance payments have already been made. For environmental reasons, however, an expansion of the Würzburg-West motorway triangle into a motorway junction is unlikely.

The western bypass for Würzburg, which has been planned as a motorway since the 1970s, is to be implemented through this approx. 43 km long road.

The proponents expect not only a positive economic impulse for the structurally weak region, but also a significant reduction in traffic congestion in the cities of Arnstein and Würzburg as well as the communities along the current federal highway 26 . For the city of Würzburg, this concerns in particular the federal highway 19 with the city ring south and the north bypass.

In addition to ecological concerns, opponents of the project also have economic doubts as to whether this compromise solution is useful for both of the aims pursued.

The regional planning procedure was supposed to start in 2010 and was finally officially initiated on February 14, 2011.

The B 26n is urgently needed in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 and the section from the Schweinfurt / Werneck motorway junction to Karlstadt ; there are two, three and four-lane project proposals for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 . This section is expected to be Template: future / in 5 yearscompleted by 2030 .

The Federal Ministry of Transport approved the route in April 2019.

The approx. 60 km long planning route is expected to cost approx. 260 million euros and is divided into 3 areas:

The 8 km long section of the federal road 26a , which is already under traffic and will later be renamed the B 26n , also belongs to the entire route of the federal highway 26n .

The B 26n is currently planned as a 2 + 1 road , after it was originally intended as a motorway-like four-lane federal road with separate lanes.
