ESC 2016ESC 2018SwedenSweden PortugalPortugal

The 62nd  Eurovision Song Contest took place from May 9th to 13th, 2017 in the International Exhibition Center (IEC) in the Ukrainian capital Kiev . This is the second time that Kiev has hosted the competition since 2005 . After Jamala won the ESC 2016 in Stockholm ( Sweden ) on May 14, 2016 with the song 1944 , the Ukrainian broadcaster Nazionalna Telekompanija Ukrajiny (NTU) was commissioned to organize the Eurovision Song Contest.

Salvador Sobral won the competition for Portugal with the song Amar pelos dois .

It was the first win for Portugal in this competition after 48 appearances since 1964, in which only a sixth place dated 1996 as the best result. No country had to wait so long for their first victory in this competition. Finland previously held this record with 40 participations. Portugal , Bulgaria and Moldova each achieved their best results this year.

The German contribution, Perfect Life sung by Levina , came in penultimate place ahead of Spain, after Germany had been last in the two previous years. Austria scored 93 points in the jury rating, but could not achieve any points in the audience rating and thus reached 16th place. Switzerland was eliminated in the semi-finals.

A total of 180 million viewers followed the Eurovision Song Contest 2017, 24 million fewer than in the previous year, which is due to the absence of Russia. In relative terms, however, the final had a similarly high market share as in 2016.

On June 24, 2016, the Ukrainian television together with the Ukrainian government presented a catalog of requirements for the potential host city:

  • The host arena should offer space for at least 7,000, but ideally for 10,000 spectators.
  • The host arena must be covered.
  • A press center for at least 1,550 journalists should be available on the premises.
  • The host city should be located near a commercial airport.
  • Sufficient hotels and hotel rooms must be available for the duration of the event in the vicinity of the venue.
  • At least 3,000 people should be available for various events such as the reception and the farewell and catering for the participating countries.
  • In addition to the events in the arena, the host city should have a cultural program that should represent the cultural identity with Ukraine.

The application process ran in the following phases:

  • June 24th to July 8th, 2016: The potential applicant cities had the opportunity to submit their application to the Ukrainian television company NTU by July 8th, 2016.
  • July 8 to July 15, 2016: The applications are viewed and analyzed by those responsible.
  • July 18 to July 22, 2016: The applicant cities present their city to those responsible; then submit these three applications to the EBU .
  • July 22 to August 1, 2016: Together with the EBU, those responsible at NTU assess the applicant cities with regard to their infrastructure.

Six cities submitted applications by July 8, 2016, including Kharkiv , Kherson , Dnipro , Kiev , Lviv and Odessa . In advance, Irpin , Cherkassy , Uzhhorod and Vinnytsia also expressed their interest in hosting the event.

On July 20, 2016, the six cities presented their applications as part of a two-hour television broadcast by the hosting broadcaster Nazionalna Telekompanija Ukrajiny. The event was moderated by the Ukrainian TV presenter Timur Miroshnychenko . At the same time the show was on YouTube in the live stream transmitted. The program was produced in front of viewers and journalists. The following six representatives were present on the show and presented their city's application in a representative manner:

  • Dnipro: Borys Filatov (Mayor)
  • Kharkiv: Ihor Terekhov (Deputy Mayor)
  • Kherson: Volodymyr Mykolaenko (Mayor)
  • Kiev: Oleksij Resnikow (Deputy Head of Administration of the City of Kiev)
  • Lviv: Andrij Moskalenko (Deputy Mayor)
  • Odessa: Pawlo Wuhelman (Deputy Mayor)

On July 22, 2016, it was announced that Dnipro, Kiev and Odessa were shortlisted.

The following cities applied as the venue:

Because the rules of the EBU provide for this, NTU was the first to receive the order for the alignment and also accepted it. Because of Jamala's origins from the Crimea , it was discussed whether the competition should be held there. After Russia's annexation of Crimea, in violation of international law, claimed the peninsula for itself and said that the ESC could only have taken place there if the Russian contribution had won. However, this proposal was not followed up.

In an interview with BBC Ukrainian, the former director of the host television station NTU Taras Stezkiw said that he considered the Kiev Olympic Stadium, as well as the candidate city of Lviv, to be unsuitable because it lacks a suitable venue.

On June 30, 2016, however, it was announced that Ukraine did not have any suitable arenas to host the Eurovision Song Contest and that it was still being discussed whether it would be able to host the ESC at all.

The host city of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 should be announced on August 25, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. (CET), but the event was canceled shortly beforehand. The reason given for this was that no decision had yet been made between Kiev and Odessa and both applications should be re-examined.

An official press conference was called for September 9, 2016, 12 p.m. ( CEST ) and Kiev was announced as the venue for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. In the selection committee, 19 votes for Kiev and two for Odessa with one abstention. Dnipro received no vote.

format

At the delegation meeting, the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 was originally dated May 16, 18 and 20, 2017. But at the request of the host television station NTU, the two semi-finals were postponed to the 9th and 11th and the final to May 13th, 2017. The reason given the broadcaster was the day of remembrance for the victims of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars to Central Asia. However, the new dates clash with the second legs of the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League and 2016/17 UEFA Europa League semi-finals . The dates were only finally set with the announcement of the venue.

The budget for the ESC 2017 should be between eight and 13 million euros .

Management and host

The organizing committee of the ESC 2017 consisted of the Minister of Culture, twelve other politicians and the head of the hosting broadcaster NTU.

On December 1, 2016, Viktoria Romanova and Oleksandr Charebin were announced as executive producers and Stuart Barlow as show producer. She and other key members of the senior production team resigned on February 10, 2017. The production team is said to have voluntarily stopped their work after inconsistencies and delays in planning had occurred in advance.

For the first time it was planned that three men should moderate the Eurovision Song Contest and for the first time since 1956 , i.e. the first contest, no woman will moderate. On February 27, 2017, Volodymyr Ostaptschuk , Oleksandr Skitschko and Timur Miroschnytschenko were presented to the public as hosts.

Motto and stage design

On January 30, 2017, NTU announced the official logo and motto Celebrate Diversity . The logo is based on a traditional Ukrainian pearl necklace - named Namysto - which is also considered a protective amulet. The different patterns on the balls of the logo are intended to represent the diversity of the motto.

One day after the announcement of the logo and the motto, the stage was presented, which was designed by Florian Wieder , who was already responsible for the design of the ESC stages in 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Eurovision emojis

Eurovision emojis

On April 30, 2017, those responsible for the Eurovision Song Contest, in cooperation with the short message service Twitter, presented three emojis for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. If users use the hashtags # ESC2017, #Eurovision, # 12Points, #douzepoints or #CelebrateDiversity in their tweets , either part of the logo of the official Eurovision Song Contest (Eurovision heart) , the trophy or the logo of this year's Eurovision Song Contest will appear .

National juries

The national juries award half of all points in the Eurovision Song Contest. For this, the members of a country will meet and watch the dress rehearsal of the shows together. Each member then creates a ranking of all the evening's contributions based on the song's voice, composition and originality. Everyone should do this independently of the others. As soon as all lists have been completed, they will be checked by the EBU and converted into points.

On October 31, 2016, the EBU announced the list of participants on its ESC website, which with 43 participating countries included as many as in 2008 and 2011. The number decreased to 42 participating countries when Russia withdrew its participation on April 13, 2017 because of Yulia Samoilova's entry ban . Ukraine started directly in the final, having won the competition the previous year.

Portugal and Romania returned to the Song Contest after a one-year break, while Bosnia and Herzegovina did not participate for the fourth time in five years due to financial bottlenecks on the Bosnian radio.

Australia was allowed to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time in a row. After having qualified for the finals in Vienna in 2015 at the invitation of the EBU, it had to qualify for the finals in the semi-finals in Kiev, as in Stockholm 2016 . However, as in the previous year, the EBU pointed out that the decision was still pending as to whether Australia as an associate member could now always take part in the contest.

    Returning participants

Georgia's participant Tako Gatchetschiladze was supposed to represent the country as a member of the Stephane & 3G group as early as 2009 , but GBP withdrew her participation.

The Dutch participants O'G3NE took part as Lisa, Amy & Shelley in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Rotterdam and reached eleventh place out of 17 participants.

Bosnia and HerzegovinaBosnia and Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina On September 29, 2016, BHRT announced that the country could not participate due to a lack of sponsors, combined with BHRT's financial hardship due to a lack of broadcasting fees. For this reason, BHRT had already excluded participation in the ESC from 2013 to 2015 and could only participate in 2016 through sponsorship. 2016
LuxembourgLuxembourg Luxembourg On May 25, 2016, RTL announced that Luxembourg would not return in 2017. On June 21, 2016 it was announced that the parliamentary petitions committee would deal with five different petitions, one of which is calling for the country to return to the Eurovision Song Contest. On June 25, 2016, however, the broadcaster RTL gave meaningful reasons why Luxembourg could not take part in the ESC. Although a return was still being discussed, Luxembourg was not on the official list of participants and will therefore not return in 2017 either. 1993
MonacoMonaco Monaco On August 19, 2016, TMC confirmed that Monaco would not participate in the ESC 2017. 2006
MoroccoMorocco Morocco Since Morocco is not on the official list of participants, the North African country did not return in 2017 either. 1980
RussiaRussia Russia On the part of Russia, the semi-state television broadcaster Perwy kanal (First Channel) should be responsible for participating in the ESC 2017. The events should be broadcast in its program as well as in the program of Rossija 1 (state).

On March 22, it was announced that Ukraine had imposed a three-year entry ban on Russian participant Yulia Samoilova . She entered the Crimea in 2015 - illegally under Ukrainian law - without using an official Ukrainian border crossing. The EBU let it be known that it respected the host's laws, but would still try to find a solution so that all registered performers could start in Kiev. On March 23, the EBU proposed that Julija Samoilova be broadcast live via satellite, which was rejected by both Russia and Ukraine.
On April 13, the Perwy channel announced that it was withdrawing from participation in 2017 due to the circumstances. In addition, the events of the ESC will not be broadcast. The state television broadcaster Rossija followed this decision.

TurkeyTurkey Turkey On September 28, 2016, TRT confirmed that Turkey would not return in 2017 either. The automatic entry into the finals of the Big Five and the use of specialist juries have been named by TRT as reasons for not taking part since 2013. 2012

LiechtensteinLiechtenstein Liechtenstein On September 21, 1 FL TV announced that it would not debut in 2017. Talks with the EBU regarding membership in December are aimed at. However, this would require government support and additional financial resources.

For 2017, the Ukrainian government made 42.8 million euros available, of which more than 16 million euros should be spent on the ESC. This leaves the station with only 26 million euros, which leads to financial bottlenecks in the financing of further projects of the station.

    • For the first time, several exclusively male moderators moderated the Eurovision Song Contest. This is the first time since 1956 that the Eurovision Song Contest is not moderated by a woman.
    • For the first time since 1998 , the number of participating countries did not change compared to the previous year. 42 countries took part in both 2016 and 2017. In both cases, a country withdrew shortly before the event. In 2016 it was Romania, in 2017 it was Russia.

    • BulgariaBulgaria Bulgaria : The Bulgarian performer Kristian Kostow was the first performer in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest to be born after January 1, 2000. He was also the youngest interpreter of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 and the youngest ever to appear for Bulgaria.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2017 was the last broadcast of the Israeli broadcaster IBA , which was subsequently switched off. The points spokesman Ofer Nachshon said goodbye as part of the awarding of points.

    • LatviaLatvia Latvia : In the Latvian preliminary decision Supernova 2017 there was a vote on the music platform Spotify .
    • Macedonia 1995Macedonia Macedonia : Jana Burčeska announced her pregnancy in her single player. During the show, her boyfriend Alexander proposed to her, which she accepted.

Together with the Norwegian Elisabeth Andreassen , the Swiss music group Peter, Sue & Marc and the Belgian Fud Leclerc , she holds the record for the most participation in this competition.
