◄ ESC 2015 • ESC 2017 ► |
The 61st Eurovision Song Contest took place from May 10th to 14th, 2016 in the Globen Arena in the Swedish capital Stockholm . The city hosted the competition for the third time after 1975 and 2000 . After Måns Zelmerlöw won the ESC 2015 in Vienna on May 23, 2015 with the song Heroes , the Swedish broadcaster SVT was commissioned to host the upcoming event.
The competition won for Ukraine Jamala with the song 1944 , which the singer wrote with Arthur Antonyan; Australia came in second .
The winning title is a reference to the year in which Josef Stalin , the Crimean Tatars to Central Asia deport left. The lyrics are in English , the chorus in Crimean Tatar . Ukraine took part again after a year-long absence, having decided not to take part in 2015 for financial reasons and because of the political situation in the country.
The EBU had received numerous complaints against the song in advance, especially from Russia , since ESC contributions are not allowed to contain political statements according to the rules. However, the bodies of the EBU decided that 1944 did not violate the rules of competition. The song had been checked and those responsible came to the conclusion that "the title and lyrics do not contain a political message and that the song does not contradict the rules of the competition". The song describes in detail the events of about 70 years ago; the annexation of Crimea by Russia is not directly addressed.
Bosnia-Herzegovina returned after a three-year break, Croatia and Bulgaria after a two-year break. Portugal withdrew from the competition for the second time in four years after 2013. Romania had been disqualified for unpaid debts. The Czech Republic was able to move into a final of the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time , while Greece and Bosnia-Herzegovina were eliminated in the semifinals for the first time in 2016. 2000 and 2016 are the only years since the turn of the millennium without a Greek contribution in the final. 2016 was the third year in which all Scandinavian countries participating in the semi-finals were eliminated, in contrast to the previous times there were four countries this time, which means that Sweden, pre-qualified as host, was the only Scandinavian country represented in the final.
As in the previous year, the last place in the final went to the contribution from Germany , while the previous year's penultimate Austria reached 13th place. The Switzerland was eliminated already as last year in the second semi-final as the last placed.
A total of 204 million viewers followed the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, five million more than in the previous year.

Management and host
On the night of his victory, Måns Zelmerlöw expressed his interest in taking on a role as a moderator.
Christer Björkman also said on May 25, 2015 that Petra Mede , Sanna Nielsen as well as Gina Dirawi and Dolph Lundgren could be possible hosts. Petra Mede had already moderated the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 and together with Graham Norton Eurovision Greatest Hits . Sanna Nielsen competed for Sweden in 2014 and moderated the Swedish preliminary decision Melodifestivalen the following year . Gina Dirawi also moderated the Swedish preliminary decision in 2012, 2013 and 2016. On December 14th, 2015 SVT announced that Petra Mede and Måns Zelmerlöw will moderate the ESC.
On September 4th, 2015 the core team of the ESC production was announced:
- Martin Österdahl and Johan Bernhagen - Executive Producers
- Tobias Åberg - Head of Production
- Christer Björkman - Contest Producer
- Sven Stojanović - Show Producer
- Lotta Loosme - Head of Communications
- Sofi Franzén - Head of Events, City and Partners
- Josephine Görander - Executive Assistant and Office Manager
Österdahl, Åberg and Björkman were already involved in the production of the competition in 2013, while Stojanović was a director in 2000 and 2003 to 2005 and 2008.
format
SVT discussed a possible postponement of the start of the events from 9 p.m. ( CEST ) to 8 p.m. (CEST) in order to offer families with children in particular the opportunity to watch the programs in full. Furthermore, they wanted to open up to the Eastern European television audience, where the Eurovision Song Contest begins much later. However, this idea was not realized.
In addition, the Big 5 countries and hosts Sweden played a bigger role in the semi-finals. In the semifinals, in which these countries were entitled to vote, they presented their song out of competition. As before, however, they were directly qualified for the final evening.
Live shows
There were two more audience shows before each live TV show. The day before the jury shows took place, after which the national juries submitted their votes. They were recorded and would have been used if the live TV show had a broadcast failure. The afternoon family shows were the final runs before the live TV show. Their name comes from the fact that they are particularly suitable for families with children who want to see the show live but do not want to stay up late at night.

Change of scoring
On February 18, 2016, the EBU announced a change in the awarding of points. This year, the points of the juries and the telephone vote were not combined for each country, but awarded separately. Each country thus awarded twelve points twice, twice as much as has been customary since 1975. The representatives of the federal states only presented the 12 points of the best-placed song to the jury, points 1 to 8 and 10 points were only faded in, as in some cases in previous years. After all points of the jury had been awarded, all points from the televoting of all countries were combined. The rankings 26–11 of the public voting were displayed. The moderators then presented these combined points, starting with the country that received the fewest points in 10th place.
National juries
The national juries awarded half of all points in the Eurovision Song Contest. For this purpose, the members met and saw the dress rehearsal of the shows together. Each member then created a ranking list of all contributions for the evening based on the voice, composition and originality of the song. Everyone should do this independently of the others. All lists were completed, they were checked by the EBU and converted into points.

countries
On November 17th, the EBU announced that Australia would participate for the second time in a row. This time it had to qualify for the final in a semi-final. In addition, the EBU pointed out that the decision was still pending as to whether Australia would be allowed to participate permanently as an associate member with a large Eurovision fan base. As the 41st country, Bosnia and Herzegovina confirmed its first participation since 2012. The registration deadline was September 15, 2015. Until October 10, 2015, the previously announced countries could withdraw without paying a fine to the EBU. On November 26, 2015, the final list of 43 nations was announced, including Bulgaria and Croatia, which last took part in 2013.
This meant that as many countries were originally supposed to participate as in 2008 and 2011 . Romania was excluded from the EBU on April 22, 2016 because of outstanding payments of ten million euros, which directly resulted in the disqualification of Romania's contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest. That is why 42 countries took part in 2016, as many as in 2007 , 2009 and 2012 . The relatively late decision of the EBU to disqualify Romania means that the Romanian contribution is included on the CDs already produced for the ESC 2016.

Kosovo | On May 31, 2015, the Kosovar Deputy Foreign Minister Petrit Selimi declared that Kosovo would definitely take part in the upcoming song contests. Since Kosovo is not a member of the United Nations , it could not legally take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. When asked by the EBU, it was announced that Kosovo would not be allowed to participate in the ESC without membership in the EBU. |
Liechtenstein | 1 FL TV announced on September 16, 2015 that Liechtenstein will not take part in the ESC in 2016 either. |
People's Republic of China | Hunan TV expressed interest in the Eurovision Song Contest, which was initially openly accepted by the EBU, since it was positive to include new elements in the contest. National preliminary decisions
Belgium
→ Main article: Eurosong 2016
For 2016, five artists who were previously unknown in Belgium were determined internally and presented on November 16, 2015 in the morning radio show by Peter Van der Veire.
On January 3, 2016, the five participants demonstrated their singing talent and their stage presence in a show, before the respective contributions were presented on January 10. The final took place a week later on January 17, 2016, when the Belgian callers and an international jury from ten other European countries each had half to decide on the Belgian representative.
The winner was Laura Tesoro with her title What's the Pressure .
Germany
On November 19, 2015, Xavier Naidoo was announced as the German representative for Stockholm. A preliminary decision was planned for February 18, 2016 called Our Song for Xavier . Due to the immense public criticism of Naidoo's nomination, the Mannheim artist's participation was withdrawn on November 21st to prevent the ESC from being damaged.
On January 5, it was announced that the preliminary decision would be Our Song for Stockholm and that it would take place on February 25, 2016 in Cologne. A week later the list with the artists and their songs was published. Jamie-Lee Kriewitz won the preliminary round with her song Ghost .
Austria
Under the title Eurovision Song Contest - Who sings for Austria? the national preliminary decision took place again. On February 12, 2016, ten candidates were evaluated by a jury and the audience via televoting and the winner was allowed to represent Austria in Stockholm. Nine of the ten candidates were selected directly by the ORF . The tenth artist was selected by wildcard through a Facebook vote.
Austria was represented by Zoë Straub with Loin d'ici in Stockholm.
Switzerland
The finale of the show The Big Decision Show 2016 took place on February 13, 2016 at 8:10 p.m. ( CET ) in the Bodensee-Arena in Kreuzlingen and was broadcast by SRF 1 . Semifinals
draw
The semi-final draw took place on January 25, 2016 in Stockholm City Hall, moderated by Alexandra Pascalidou and Jovan Radomir. There it was decided in which semifinals the countries will compete. It was also determined in which semifinals the Big Five countries and the host Sweden will be eligible to vote. Due to a request from ARD , Germany was assigned voting rights in the second semifinals without a draw. Sweden was also assigned to the first semifinals in advance via the SVT broadcaster . The other countries were drawn. In addition, the official motto and logo was announced on January 25th.
Based on the voting pattern of the past eleven years, the 37 countries in the semi-finals were divided into six pots. The German company Digame came to the following distribution:
Pot 1 | Pot 2 | Pot 3 | Pot 4 | Pot 5 | Pot 6 |

final
The final took place on May 14, 2016 at 9:00 p.m. ( CEST ). The Big Five countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom) and the host country Sweden qualified directly for the final. In addition, there were ten countries each from the two semi-finals, so that 26 countries competed in the final. All 42 participating countries were entitled to vote.
The Netherlands , Malta and Ukraine took part in the finals for the first time after two years, Croatia after seven years and Bulgaria after nine years, and the Czech Republic for the first time ever. This is the first time since the introduction of the semi-final system that Greece and Bosnia and Herzegovina have failed to qualify for the final. With the exception of the automatically seeded host country Sweden , no Scandinavian country qualified for the final in 2016.
As in previous years, the finale opened with a flag parade of the 26 participating artists. However, there were no physical flags that year; Instead, the flags of the participating countries were projected onto the clothing of 26 dancers. The Fashion Flag Parade was accompanied by songs by well-known Swedish DJs . These included: Antidote ( Swedish House Mafia ), One (Swedish House Mafia), Save The World (Swedish House Mafia), Wake Me Up ( Avicii ), Waiting for Love (Avicii), Silhouettes (Avicii), Levels (Avicii ), Greyhound (Swedish House Mafia), Runaway ( Galantis ), Years ( Alesso feat. Matthew Koma ), Don't You Worry Child (Swedish House Mafia).
During the televoting, the American singer Justin Timberlake performed with the songs Can't Stop the Feeling! and Rock Your Body , the moderators with the play Love Love Peace Peace and Måns Zelmerlöw with last year's winning song, Heroes , and Fire in the Rain .

Voting error by Danish juror
Hours after the final, the Danish daily Berlingske reported that the 69-year-old Danish juror Hilda Heick had given her points in the wrong order due to her misunderstanding. So she did not put Australia in first place, as intended, but in last place, conversely, Ukraine in second place instead of 25. In the Danish jury's decision, Australia would have received 12 instead of 10 points, Ukraine 0 instead of 12 and Russia instead of 3 0; overall, Ukraine would have only won by 9 instead of 23 points.

Comparison of old vs. new point system
If the old system had been scored in previous years, Australia would have won the competition. Germany would have reached the penultimate place. If the old voting system had been used and the order of submission of points had remained the same, the winner would only have been determined after the 40th voting - Hungary - Australia.

Marcel Bezençon Prize
This year's winners of the Marcel Bezençon Prize , which has been awarded since 2002, are:
- Press award for the best song: Russia - You Are the Only One - Sergei Lasarew
- Artist Prize for the best female artist: Ukraine - Jamala - 1944
- Composer Prize for the best composition / text: Australia - David Musumeci and Anthony Egizi - Sound of Silence
Others
- Petra Mede is the first presenter since Katie Boyle , who has presented the Eurovision Song Contest several times.
- For the first time since 2009 , two moderators again led the event.
- With 43 countries, as many countries were originally supposed to participate as in 2008 and 2011 . However, due to Romania's disqualification, there were only 42 countries.
- For the first time, a public viewing party took place in the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm parallel to the ESC. Sanna Nielsen , who represented Sweden in Copenhagen in 2014 , moderated them.
- Australia : After 2015 , Australia took part again in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2016. A permanent possibility of participation is still being discussed.
Australia was also originally drawn into the first half of its semi-finals. Due to the disqualification of Romania, there were only eight participants in the already smaller second half. Since Australia had the starting position 10, but this is in the first half with 19 participants, Australia was now de facto in the second half.
- Armenia : The Armenian singer Iveta Mukuchyan took part in the German casting show The Voice of Germany in 2012 and also grew up in Germany . She is the first representative for Armenia with German connections. Mukuchyan showed up after her appearance in the first semifinals in the Green Room with a flag of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh . Armenia was then warned by the EBU . For the DVD, which was released later, the scenes in which the flag could be seen were censored.
- Belgium : Laura Tesoro was the last to appear in the semi-finals, but first in the final.
- Bosnia and Herzegovina : For the first time since the introduction of the semi-finals, Bosnia-Herzegovina was eliminated in the semi-finals.
- Bulgaria : The Bulgarian participant Poli Genova was also the Bulgarian representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 . She also moderated the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Sofia .
- Germany : The eleven points received for Ghost (one from the Georgian jury, eight from the Swiss and two from the Austrian viewers) mean a deterioration compared to the 2015 performance, as the German contribution from the previous year would have received 29 points had it been evaluated separately. However, if the combined rating that existed until 2015 was applied to 2016, Germany would have received eight points, which would represent an improvement over 2015.
- Estonia : Stig Rästa , who represented Estonia in Vienna in 2015 together with Elina Born , returned to the competition as the composer of the Estonian contribution Play .
- Finland : The singer Krista Siegfrids , who represented Finland in 2013 , moderated the Finnish preliminary decision Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2016 and also took part in the Swedish preliminary decision Melodifestivalen 2016 . She also awarded the Finnish points in 2015.
- Georgia : For the second time in a row, the Swede Thomas G: son contributed to the Georgian contribution as an author. In addition, they had the same start numbers as in the previous year (semi-finals: 16, final: 23).
- Greece : For the first time since 2004 , Greece selected the contribution internally, and also for the first time a contribution was sung in Pontic . In addition, Greece was eliminated in the semifinals for the first time since the introduction of the semifinals.
- Italy : The winners of the Sanremo Festival 2016 , the band Stadio , declined to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. Instead, the TV company RAI decided on the runner-up Francesca Michielin .
- Croatia : Nina Kraljić from Croatia received the 20th and last Barbara Dex Award. The ESC "honors" the worst outfit with the award.
- Latvia : Aminata , who represented Latvia in the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest, returned to the competition as the composer of the Latvian contribution Heartbeat by Justs Sirmais .
- Malta : Although Ira Losco won the Maltese preliminary decision for the ESC with the song Chameleon (Invincible) , the contribution was changed two months later. The Swedish singer Molly Pettersson Hammar , who took part in the Melodifestivalen in 2015 and 2016 , is one of the authors of the contribution. Pettersson Hammar supported Losco as an accompanist.
- Netherlands : Douwe Bob is the first male solo performer for the Netherlands since 1992 .
- Austria : For the first time, the Austrian contribution was sung entirely in French. After the Cypriot contribution in 2007 , it is the second contribution from a non-French-speaking country that was sung entirely in French.
- Poland : The Polish contribution took 25th place in the jury evaluation with just seven points, while the audience voted the song in third place with 222 points. This was the biggest difference between jury and audience voting.
- Russia : The Russian juror Anastassija Alexandrovna Stozkaja was suspended from the broadcaster RTR at the instigation of the EBU because she published a video on the Internet that the jury showed while watching the live stream of the second dress rehearsal for the first semifinals. Stozkaja's scoring for the semi-finals has been declared invalid. RTR nominated a substitute judge for the final.
- San Marino : For San Marino joined with the Turks Serhat an interpreter at no connection to the represented country. In addition, a male solo performer for San Marino appeared for the first time .
- Sweden : At 17, Frans is the youngest representative of Sweden since Carola in 1983 .
- Switzerland : Rykka is the third Canadian to represent Switzerland at the ESC and the first since 1993 .
- Spain : The Spanish contribution Say Yay! is the first in the country to contain only an English text.
- Czech Republic : With Gabriela Gunčíková and her song I Stand , the Czech Republic made it into the finals for the first time in 2016.
- Ukraine : In 1944 , at least part of an article was written in Crimean Tatar for the first time . It is also the first winning song since 2007 that contains non-English text and the first winning entry that won neither the jury voting nor the televoting, but only came second in both. It was also the first entry from the number 21 to win the competition.
- United Kingdom : After rather modest success over the past five years, the United Kingdom returned to a large-scale public preliminary ruling.
