Locust (car brand)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Locust is a British kit car brand .

description

The only model is the Seven . It differs from the original Lotus Seven and the kit cars with spaceframe derived from it by its ladder frame, which is planked with 19 mm thick plywood or medium-density fibreboard. After assembly, the body is clad with aluminum sheets.

history

Originally the car was designed by John Cowperthwaite , who also designed the JC Midge , and sold as JC Locust by JC Auto Patterns .

Later the manufacturing rights were sold to T & J Sportscars , who also introduced a version based on the Ford Cortina called Hornet .

Then the concept was adopted by White Rose Vehicles (WRV), who further developed the Locust into the Locust ES and also introduced the Locust SIII based on the Ford Sierra .

In April 2000, the Locust ES was taken over by BWE Sportscars from Barnsley (Yorkshire) , which also make the Hornet and the Grasshopper , an electric car for children. The Locust SIII based on the Ford Sierra was taken over by Road Tech Engineering .

Bev Evans passed away on April 10, 2014 and BWE stopped production. The current manufacturer is unknown.

technology

The chassis is based on either the Ford or the Triumph . The Ford-based chassis is the most popular and is often fitted with the powertrains from the Ford Escort Mk. II or the Ford Cortina Mk. IV .

The first Locust had the front suspension from either the Triumph or the Ford Cortina, but there have been many changes to the chassis and design over the years. On request, there is a front axle with double wishbones or with MacPherson struts . Any engine that fits between the chassis side members can also be installed. Depending on the choice of engine and carburetor, additional openings and hoods must be made on the bonnet.
