Attendees

At these games, too, there were again exclusions of individual associations and special regulations.

Because of the repeated influence of the government on sport in their own country, Kuwait was excluded from participation by the IOC . However, Kuwaiti athletes were able to start under the Olympic flag. The Kuwaiti government filed a lawsuit in a Swiss court for damages amounting to one billion US dollars (the equivalent of around 880 million euros). But this lawsuit was unsuccessful and was dismissed.

For the first time, the doping problem led to the exclusion of an entire association. After several decisions by the IOC and complaints against it at the International Court of Justice (CAS) , it finally came about that the individual sports federations could decide independently of each other about the possibility of Russian athletes participating. The International Athletics Federation (IAAF) granted such Russian athletes under a neutral flag eligibility to participate, who could provide evidence of having complied with the doping control system regulations, as is common in all countries. Russia as an association was completely excluded.

In the course of the refugee crisis in Europe , the athletes who had fled their home country were given the opportunity to participate in Rio as members of the Refugee Olympic Athletes team under the Olympic flag .

Olympic Stadium

The athletics competitions were held in the Estádio Nilton Santos

Construction of the Estádio Nilton Santos stadium had already started in 2003 - completion in 2007. The capacity was 60,000 seats. However, there were considerable problems with the acceptance of these games with their huge costs, with the corruption of Brazilian politicians, with the high entry prices by the population in Brazil. The inhabitants, most of whom lived in poverty, did not benefit in any way from the games. Many tickets remained unsold, although the country's government was forced to set up a social program for children from the favelas.

Competitions

The competition program was identical to that of the last two games in 2008 and 2012 . The competitions for women and men were largely aligned. There was and is only one discipline that was and still is missing in the women's area compared to the men's offer: when walking, only one distance is carried out, as opposed to two distances for men. Further differences can be found in the hurdle height on the two hurdle distances and the length of the shorter hurdle route, which is 110 meters for men and 100 meters for women, in order to take into account the different stride lengths of the sexes. In addition, a heptathlon was and will be fought as an all- around for women and a decathlon for men .

qualification

Unlike the previous Olympic Games, a National Olympic Committee (NOC) could use up to three qualified athletes in each individual competition if they met the qualification standard during the given period. A NOK could also nominate a maximum of one relay per competition. NOKs without athletes with a fulfilled qualification standard could use a maximum of one female and male athlete in any competition.

The qualification standard had to be achieved from May 1, 2015 to July 11, 2016 at an official IAAF competition. The qualification period for the 10,000 m, marathons, walking competitions and all-around competitions began on January 1, 2015.

A maximum of 16 nations could qualify for the relay competitions. The top 8 of each competition at the IAAF World Relays 2015 , which took place on May 2nd and 3rd, 2015 in the Bahamas, secured a starting place for the games. The eight fastest nations according to the IAAF World Ranking List of July 12, 2016 received the remaining eight places.

The IAAF qualification standards were as follows:

doping

In contrast to the IOC, the IAAF showed itself consistently in the anti-doping fight and decided to exclude Russian athletes from the competitions unless they could prove that they had been checked regularly.

There was a doping case a few days before the 3000-meter obstacle course . The Bulgarian Silvia Danekova was suspended after a positive doping test. The blood samples showed the use of erythropoietin , EPO for short.

Moroccan Abdelmajid El Hissouf, originally placed 68th in the marathon, was disqualified in November 2017 for taking prohibited funds. In addition, he was suspended for the period from November 8, 2016 to November 7, 2020.

As the second nation next to Russia, Kenya increasingly came into focus when it came to doping. Two events in the Olympic village reinforced the suspicions against Kenya:

  • The Kenyan athletics delegation chief Michael Rotich , himself a former middle distance athlete, was withdrawn from games because he is said to have warned Kenyan athletes of impending doping tests. On arrival, he was reportedly arrested at Nairobi airport.
  • Coach John Anzrah pretended to be the 800-meter runner Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich during a urine test in connection with a doping control. Kenya's Head of Mission Stephan Arap Soi said that Anzrah had used the athlete's accreditation in his possession.

The number of officially convicted doping offenders is no longer comparable with the numbers of previous games. This was certainly due to the fact that Russia, the association with by far the largest proportion of suspended athletes in the past, was excluded from participating in athletics here in Rio. But it is also clear that the subject does not end there. Even after 2008 and 2012, in many cases it took a long time for prohibited substances to be detected in existing doping samples. The victims were and are the honest athletes who did not receive their medals until years later, who were denied participation in final fights by the doping fraudsters and who lost the funding they were actually entitled to because the true placements were only verified long after the competitions.

Sporting successes

The level of performance at these Olympic Games was very high.

As so often before, the most successful nation was the United States with thirteen Olympic champions versus nine at the last games. Kenya and Jamaica each had six gold medals. It was followed by China , South Africa , Great Britain , Germany and Croatia with two Olympic victories each. All other nations won at most one gold medal in athletics.

For the individual athletes, the following services are particularly worth mentioning.
