The federal highway 401 (abbreviation: B 401 ) is a federal highway in Germany . It leads from Heede to Oldenburg . Between Surwold and Esterwegen, the B 401 is part of the Green Coast Road .

The federal highway 401 begins at the Dörpen junction of the A 31 in the area of ​​the municipality of Heede in Emsland , about three kilometers east of the border with the Netherlands . It leads in an easterly direction and after crossing the Ems runs largely parallel to the coastal canal , which it crosses twice. It crosses several moor areas . It ends at the Oldenburg-Eversten junction of the A 28 . Since its inception, the B 401 has only had one through-town, namely in the course of Hundsmühler Straße in Oldenburg. The relatively small number of traffic lights along the route is also noticeable for a federal road that is largely not free of intersections and, together with the fog banks that often appear suddenly in the moorland, ensure that serious accidents with fatalities and injuries repeatedly occur on the B 401.

Bundesstrasse 401 is the oldest federal highway in the Federal Republic of Germany, which was not dedicated as a Reichsstrasse before 1945 . Before the completion of the coastal canal in 1935, there was no continuous road link along its later route. Along the Hunte-Ems Canal , the forerunner of the coastal canal in its eastern section, roads had already been paved before 1935, mostly with Bockhorn clinker . The section west of the Elisabethfehn Canal was built at the same time as the canal and was also completed in 1935.

The 401 federal road originally began on the B 70 east of Dörpen and south of Dörpen train station. In the first few years she only crossed the coastal channel once, at Bockhorst. On the occasion of the construction of the federal motorway 31 in the 1990s, the B 401 was extended beyond the B 70. The B 401 now begins on the A 31 and runs past the center of Dörpen. The section immediately east of the B 70 was also relocated to the north side of the coastal canal.

Immediately south of the B 401 near the eastern canal bridge in the area of ​​the municipality of Nordhümmling is a cemetery where victims of the Nazi tyranny were buried. Today there is an open memorial hall and a memorial stone that commemorates one of the most famous prisoners of the Emsland camps , the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Carl von Ossietzky .
