The federal road 87n (abbreviation: B 87n ) is a planned three-lane federal road in southern Thuringia . It is shown as an additional requirement in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 . The controversial road for nature conservation reasons is to lead from the city of Meiningen to the state border Hesse - Thuringia near Tann in the Rhön . The B 87n connects the neighboring and historically connected areas of the Thuringian and Hessian Rhön as well as the cities of Meiningen, Hünfeld and Fulda .

Planned course

In order to protect the Rhön Biosphere Reserve , the B 87n is largely planned by expanding the existing L 1124 state road without passing through town. The federal road is to run from Meiningen together with federal road 19 to Walldorf , leaving the B 19 through the Herpftal to Herpf and from there to Kaltensundheim . From there the B 87n runs on a joint route with the federal highway 285 past Kaltennordheim to Zella / Rhön , where it separates from the B 285 and leads to the Hessian border near Tann (Rhön) . There is a connection to the federal highway 278 .

Original course

The route was originally supposed to start running in a west-east direction at the AS Fulda- Middle of the A 7 and to flow via Tann through the Rhön at Walldorf into the federal highway 19 and from there to be continued together with the B 19 to Meiningen. The route was divided into section 1: Hesse (approx. 21 km), section 2: Rhön crossing (approx. 16 km) and section 3: Thuringia (approx. 20 km). Overtaking lanes were planned on inclines and a 2.1 kilometer long tunnel through the Weidberg between Unterweid and Oberweid when crossing the Rhön .

Planning status

In the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 , the B 87n is currently classified as an additional requirement (WB). This planning concerns five sub-projects of the section Meiningen - state border Hesse / Thuringia - federal highway 278 with an extension length of 17.9 kilometers and investment costs of 76.4 million euros. A three-lane new line leads from Meiningen to Walldorf (together with the B 19 ) and then between Melkers and Rippershausen to Herpf and Stepfershausen (9.3 km). In addition, only bypasses are planned for Oberkatz (2 km), Kaltennordheim (4.2 km) and Diedorf (2.4 km).

history

In 1996 the federal states of Hesse and Thuringia decided to connect the economic areas of Meiningen and Fulda with a federal road as a two-lane "Rhönschnellweg" (B 87n). Due to the division of Germany , there has been no efficient road connection from southern Thuringia to eastern Hesse since German reunification . A previously planned extension of the A 66 to the A 71 near Meiningen was not pursued any further. So far, problems have arisen due to the impassable terrain in the "Hohe Rhön" and the Rhön Biosphere Reserve.

The B 87n was to connect Fulda and Meiningen with a 57 km long route and significantly improve the connection between southern Thuringia and the Frankfurt am Main metropolitan region . It was classified as an urgent need with a special nature conservation planning mandate in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 and was in the regional planning procedure from 2006 , which was concluded. In January 2013, the Federal Ministry of Transport rejected the route, particularly on the Hessian side via Tann (Rhön) because of nature conservation concerns, and thus stopped planning the federal road. Construction was initially scheduled to start in 2012 and then in 2015 at the earliest. The section Fulda – Tann was finally discarded. The section in Thuringia was included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 in 2016 due to the regional urgency that still existed and the economic efficiency test passed.

Protests

There was resistance to the construction of the federal road from nature conservation associations and citizens' initiatives, who fear that the Rhön and especially the biosphere reserve would be endangered. Although the citizens of the neighboring towns generally welcome the route, there have been and still are protests against certain bypass options in individual communities. The forecast traffic figures have been questioned by some opponents of the route.
