Course of the road

The federal road 242 (abbreviation: B 242 ) is a German federal road that runs from Seesen to Mansfeld . It leads once completely over the Harz and is therefore also called Harzhochstraße .
History and course
Originally the B 242 did not begin in Seesen, but between Gittelde and Münchehof on the B 243. After this was relocated between Seesen and Gittelde via the junction of the A 7 , the original route via Herrhausen and Münchehof was integrated into the B 242.
The road then continues through the Upper Harz north past Bad Grund and through Clausthal , the Hochharz, where it runs for a few kilometers together with the B 4 , at Braunlage and then runs through the Lower Harz near Harzgerode to the Mansfeld region . There it meets the B 180 after crossing Leimbach together with the B 86 .
Before the construction of the Hettstedt bypass of the B 180, the B 242 led from Leimbach south to Klostermansfeld and then further east past the Zirkelschacht until it met the then B 180 south of Siersleben. The last section from Klostermansfeld was temporarily included in the bypass of the B 180, and from 2018 to 2020 it was replaced by a parallel new building bridging the crossed Mansfeld mine railway.
The direct extension of the B 242 via Polleben and Salzmünde to Halle (Saale) , the L 159, is well developed, but does not have the status of a federal road.
Between Königerode and Leimbach you can find the name Claus-Str on old maps for the course of the road. There it is still called Klausstraße today.
